Produced from Douro red grapes through an innovative technique which extracts fresh, fruity flavours and delivers a subtle and delicate pink colour. The vinification method extracts a light amount of colour from the skins without extracting astringent tannins and without letting the fortification process dominate the final product. The cold decantation that precedes the cold fermentation is fundamental to ensure the freshness of the fruit aromas and their elegance.

This Colheita is rather unusual – at one level there is plenty of young, mature fruit (black plums) and at the other, there are a more tertiary, complex flavours associated with dry fruits and spice. On tasting, at the beginning, the wine is vigorous and full of flavour getting more complex on the palate and ending with a mixture of fresh fruit, nuts, dried apricot and spice. The finish is very elegant and long. This Colheita successfully marries two worlds – the energy and opulence of fruit from Ruby ports and the elegance and complexity of Tawnies.

The nose shows a beguiling mixture of ripe mulberry, white pepper, buchu (a medicinal herb from the Cape Floral Kingdom, used as a blackcurrant flavouring), framed in a touch of toasty, vanilla oak and just the faintest hint of minty caramel chocolate. The palate echos the blackcurrant, mulberry and dark cherry. The tannins are super smooth, long and persistent. This wine benefits from being decanted a day or two before consuming. It will age gracefully for at least 30 years if stored correctly

The label is based on one of the oldest ever used by a Brazilian winery and could easily pass for a top Douro red with its proud display of its grape varieties: Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz, two of Portugal’s star grapes. Spicy, dry, fruity and ripe with a lovely savoury edge and ever so slightly chunky tannins.
