Fonseca Guimaerens Vintage Port 2015
Opaque purple-black at the centre with a very thin, purple edge. A classic Fonseca nose redolent of heady, woodland fruit, powerful but also very fine and complex. The dense blackberry and blackcurrant aromas form the backdrop for a display of fresh, minty, balsamic scents and resiny notes of gumcistus and wild herbs. Discreet hints of exotic wood, liquorice and black pepper provide an additional dimension of complexity.
The thick, tightly-woven tannins provide both firmness and volume to the palate which is built around a core of dense, dark berry fruit. Plummy, raspberry flavours emerge on the long, luscious finish, giving it an attractive crispness and lift. Fonseca's 200th anniversary year has produced an exceptional Guimaraens Vintage Port, expressive and approachable but with the stamina to improve over many years in the cellar.

Taylors Classic Vintage Port 2016
Deep purple black with a narrow magenta rim. High notes of pure, intense woodland fruit with lively accents of green apple, fresh plum and raspberry. Around this core of bright, singing fruit is a heady aura of gumcistus and wild herbs. On a deeper register, exotic notes of cedarwood and jasmine provide an additional dimension of complexity. The wine has an attractive leanness and muscularity with sinewy, linear tannins that integrate seamlessly into the mid palate and then re-emerge to hold the wine in a confident grip. Energised by a racy acidity, the intense berry flavours continue to build into the long finish. Although the keynotes are refinement and poise, the wine displays the restrained vigour and stamina that are the hallmarks of the Taylor style.

Taylors Single Harvest Tawny 1969
Deep mahogany colour with discreet olive highlights on the rim. Very fine, elegant nose, with an opulent core of wild honey, treacle and butterscotch infused with a spicy redolence of black pepper and cinnamon. Cedary cigar box aromas, savoury scents of wild herbs and a discreet aura of fresh mint add a further layer of complexity. The perfectly calibrated palate is lifted by a fresh acidity and delivers a wealth of rich mellow flavour, molasses, dried figs, sultanas and apricot confit. The finish is clean and bright, with ripe pear and mint and very discreet zesty citrus notes.

Quinta de la Rosa Colheita 2009 Port
This Colheita is rather unusual – at one level there is plenty of young, mature fruit (black plums) and at the other, there are a more tertiary, complex flavours associated with dry fruits and spice. On tasting, at the beginning, the wine is vigorous and full of flavour getting more complex on the palate and ending with a mixture of fresh fruit, nuts, dried apricot and spice. The finish is very elegant and long. This Colheita successfully marries two worlds – the energy and opulence of fruit from Ruby ports and the elegance and complexity of Tawnies.

Fonseca Terra Prima
Silky-smooth aromas of crushed red berry fruits and chocolate with little herbal nuances. On the palate that herbal quality is still there but some pure, velvety, cherry and plum fruit fills in nicely, the subtle sweetness developing but staying balanced by a certain acidity and a fairly nimble, lighter-bodied character. Sweet and macerated fruit on the nose, initially with a little confectionery and violets, nevertheless very traditional with plenty of fruit, a moderate substance and a gently creamy midpalate. There is plenty of peppery grip, good acidity and a very firm structure. All in all though it has a nice style, with good substance to it, plenty of dark, tobacco-laced fruits and an attractive roasted-herb edge
