Akarua Rose Brut Central Otago NV
The Akarua Brut NV Rosé is a wine of ‘character’ blended from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
It has a vibrant pink/ red hue and its aroma shows hints of strawberry as well as complex nutty and yeasty notes. The palate has a good Pinot Noir influence, a lovely creamy mid palate and it carries to a long, savoury, brut finish.
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from several blocks on the estate vineyard are hand harvested and whole bunch pressed. All batches are kept separate. Juices are settled and racked to fermentation in old French oak barriques and stainless steel tanks.
For the Rosé, one Pinot Noir batch is fermented on skins to produce a red coloured base wine for inclusion in the blend.
Once malolactic fermentation is complete the base wines, together with up to 15% of reserve wine that have been aged for several years in old French oak are blended to produce the Akarua NV Rosé . The red base wine that gives the Rosé its distinctive colour comprises about 10% of the blend.
The blended base wines are transferred to bottle with a yeast and a precise amount of sugar to undergo the secondary sparkling fermentation. They are then aged on yeast in bottle before riddling, disgorging and labelling.
Central Otago, as a viticultural region, arguably more than any other New Zealand wine growing region, has rapidly gained international market and media credibility for producing pinot noir. Pioneers in the 1980’s such as Alan Brady at Gibbston, Vernon & Sue Burgess at Alexandra and Rolf & Lois Mills in Wanaka, had defied all nay-sayers by producing serious wines under the most challenging circumstances and this activated a surge of enthusiasm and investment in the industry over the next two decades.
Akarua has never been in such a strong position as it is today under second generation family leadership of David Skeggs at the helm of the business, with award winning winemaker Andrew Keenleyside heading the winemaking team. The complete Akarua portfolio now consists of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Rosé, Riesling and Sparkling Wine. Akarua released their Sparkling Wine range in 2011 under the supervision of renowned sparkling wine specialist ‘Tony Jordan’. Since their release, the Akarua Sparkling Wine range has been awarded numerous trophies and awards in both New Zealand and abroad.
