Bibi Graetz Casamatta Rosso
Bibi Graetz Casamatta Rosso, is medium-bodied, juicy red offers plenty of dark red fruit in an accessible style underpinned with a bright accent of acidity.
Considered one of Italy’s most ingenious winemakers, Bibi Graetz has risen from artist to cult winemaker since the release of his first wines back in 2000.
Without any formal training and with initially only a small 2 hectare vineyard on his parents’ property overlooking Florence, he has managed to unceremoniously gatecrash the staid Tuscan wine scene and, in Testamatta, create one of Italy’s great cult wines.
Born and raised in Italy, Bibi makes his wine in his family home, Castello di Vincigliata, a castle in Fiesole.
The lack of a traditional Tuscan Estate has freed him to search out parcels of old vines around Tuscany- and even the Isola di Giglio – which are the basis for his concentrated, yet elegant wines. www.bibigraetz.com
Now rated in the top 12 collectable Tuscan producers, Bibi’s wines have gone from strength to strength over the past decade.
Using organic cultivation methods and resisting the trend of planting Cabernet and Merlot, these wines are the ultimate expression of indigenous grape varieties.
Favourable scores from Robert Parker, and in particular a score of 98 for the Testamatta 2006 from Wine Spectator, was followed by a November 2008 press release declaration by the township of Fiesole, as the score was proclaimed to have “made Fiesole a full-fledged member on the map of the great wines of Italy and the world”.
Graetz’ mid-range wine Soffocone di Vincigliata was banned from U.S. import due to regulations that permit no wine label to feature any type of sexual imagery.
This did not come into effect until Graetz had made public the explanation that his Vincigliata vineyard is a favoured destination for local young lovers, and “soffocone” is a crude Firenze term for fellatio, at which point the figurative label depiction was seen in a new light. A revised label image was later permitted for U.S. import.
