Blackwoods Shetland Gin

Blackwoods Shetland Gin contains handpicked Shetland botanicals each year to give our gin its distinctive, yet subtle, flavour.

Each year’s harvest is determined by the plants available from these distant islands. Using a traditional copper still,  they only produce small batches.

Harsh weather conditions only allow four hundred plant species to flourish.

However, isolated and sheltered areas, like cliff edges, provide beautiful hanging gardens of unusually hardy plants which have adapted to survive in these extreme climatic conditions.

Blackwoods Dry Gin – the world’s first vintage gin.

Our story begins with this hand crafted 40% vintage gin.

Inspired by the beautiful nature of Shetland, we wait each year for the right weather conditions to harvest our botanicals.

With each vintage the botanicals used change slightly due to the quality and quantity available.

Our Shetland botanicals are infused with juniper and coriander, plus other botanicals including lime, to give our dry gin its unique and complex flavour.

We steep the botanicals in natural mineral water to release their gentle flavours before we go on to distillation in small batches using a traditional copper still.

Over the years our vintage gin has won gold medals and been judged by experts, across the world beating many well-known brands in the process.

Tasting note:

An abundance of citrus on the nose with gentle floral notes to follow.

Extremely smooth yet crisp with citrus, herbal and floral notes coming through on the palate.

Fifty Pounds Gin 43.5%

The nose is lemon, lime, juniper, and very classic in character. Just a tinge of sweetness with a touch of creamy lemon as well. Juniper on the tip of the tongue, followed by lemon, coriander and angelica. Just a bit of spice, with citrus blossoming in the middle. The finish hints at anise, angelica, juniper and citrus rind. Tart and direct, with a very dry palate cleansing finish.

Moniack Mead

Rating:
Moniack Mead is a traditional honey mead which is produced at Moniack Castle by Highland Wineries, and is said to be one of the best meads being made in modern times. Mead is one of the oldest alcoholic drinks known in history and, like all meads, Moniack Mead is produced through the process of fermenting honey. An interesting fact about mead is that it is traditionally drunk for the month after a wedding which is where the word “honeymoon” came from. Moniack Mead has a lovely, lingering and smooth flavour with elements of caramel and fermented honey. Our recommendation is that this mead is best served either chilled or if you prefer as a aperitif. 75cl bottle

Williams Chase Herefordshire Elegant Crisp Gin 48%

This gin is complicated. The taste is the true taste of junipers highlighted by the citrus and the sweetness of the apples, elderflowers and hops. It has a beautiful and textured mouth feel due to the luscious organic apples and the naturally pure water taken straight from the aquifer that runs underneath their orchards. Try it with a slice of apple rather than lemon.

An absolutely incredible wild strawberry liqueur from Edmond Briottet. This Fraise des Bois liqueur is made by macerating the fresh fruits in alcohol. Sugar is then added. And nothing else. It's that simple.
