Cantine Belisario Lacrima di Morro d Alba - Lacrima is certainly amongst the most exciting of Italy's indigenous grape varieties.Cantine Belisario

The Cantine Belisario co-operative was founded in 1971 - today, it is the biggest producer of Verdicchio in the Matelica DOC, a smaller zone than Castello di Jesi.

The climate here is more continental than in Castelli di Jesi and the combination of warm days and cool nights gives a longer growing season, and lovely aromatic qualities to the wines

This 300 hectare co-operative is situated in Matelica in the Marches which is a smaller zone than Castello di Jesi.

The co-operative has 24 organically cultivated vineyards which are situated further inland than Castello di Jesi, where the climate is more continental.

The combination of warm days and cool nights allows the aromatic qualities of the grapes to develop and extends the growing season so that harvest takes place as late as the second half of October.

Grapes were hand-harvested into small crates. 20% underwent whole-cluster fermentation with carbonic maceration.

The remaining 80% underwent classic fermentation on their skins in stainless steel tanks.

The wine was aged in tank for six months and a further two in bottle before release.

Lacrima is a dark-skinned grape variety native to Italy's Marche region although once common it is now grown by only a handful of producers.

The word lacrima means teardrop in Italian, and is probably reference to the fact that the berries have a tendency to split, dripping teardrops of juice down the outside of the bunch.

Lacrima likes sunny sites where it can develop aromatic intensity while retaining its acidity, which helps to balance the wine. Thin skins translate to soft but definitely present tannins.
