Description

Cave de Hunawihr Gewurztraminer Reserve

Cave de Hunawihr Gewurztraminer Reserve is straw yellow in colour with silvery gold tints, the nose is very complex, with notes of exotic fruits (lychee, mango) and subtle aromas of white pepper.

The mouth of Cave de Hunawihr Gewurztraminer Reserve is full and very long, this is a wine with good freshness from lingering acidity balanced with a touch of residual sugar on the finish.

Founded in 1954, Hunawihr may be small for a co-operative, with 110 members and 200 hectares of vineyard, but it is consistently rated as one of France’s top five in terms of quality.

Much of Hunawihr’s success is due to their winemaker, Nicolas Garde, who joined in 2004 and has, year after year, crafted whistle-clean and exciting wines.

In 1954, Alsace was slowly recovering from a devastating World War II, and German occupation.

That’s when a few wine makers of Hunawihr realized that they could all improve the quality of their production by working as a team.

Blessed with amazing terroirs, the founding members spent their days working in the vines… and their nights constructing by hand the building, yet completely renovated, but still in use to this day.

50 years later, Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr ranks among the best : “La Revue du Vin de France” classified our cellar the 1st cooperative wine house in Alsace and the 3rd in France.

Picking is mainly done by hand: 100% for Grands Crus and Lieux-dits, more than 60% for the rest of the range. The grapes are taken from the vineyards to the press house in specially harvest trailers in order to conserve the entire grapes.

The winery receives only a grape variety and an origin (Reserve, Lieux-dits, Grands Crus) per day, depending on the terroir and the micro-climate, preserving the character of each parcel of vineyards.

While bottle ageing in the Tanunda cellars, the wine has developed an attractive vibrant green/gold colour. Relatively low fermentation temperatures help preserve the fresh fruit character of the grapes. 20% was fermented in large format oak. The wine was held in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks until bottling. Clear, pale straw in colour with fresh, delicate perfumes of stoned fruit, honeysuckle and almond blossom. On the palate, it is fresh but has surprising depth and a lovely peachy fruit character. A lively, lemonyzest finish offsets the ripe fruit on the palate.
