Charles Smith Kung Fu Girl Riesling

Charles Smith Kung Fu Girl Riesling is aromatic, smooth, vibrant and tasty with great flavours of Tangerine, apricot, wet stone, key lime, clove and nectarine.

Winemaking is the new rock and roll. Or in Charles Smith’s case it is the new Danish Thrash Metal.

Charles spent a decade in Europe managing various bands you’ll never have heard of (unless you misspent your youth in disused warehouses near the Copenhagen ring road) before seeing the light and heading to Washington State to plant vines.

Fast-forward a dozen vintages or so and Charles still has the hair, the t-shirts and the attitude of his music days but has replaced the guitar pick for a corkscrew and the Jack Daniels for some supremely elegant Riesling and Syrah.

Growing up just outside of Sacramento, California, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Charles Smith began craving worldly travel at a young age due to his Welsh mother and French father.

As soon as he had the chance, Charles decided to move to Denmark (for a lady friend he met in the states). While in Scandinavia, Charles spent the next nine years managing rock bands and concert tours throughout Europe, including the famed Danish duo, The Ravonettes.

Wining and dining while on the road became a catalyst for his passion of wine, which ultimately triggered the career he has today. http://www.charlessmithwines.com/about-charles-smith.php

Background:-

In 1999, he moved back to the United States, specifically to the Pacific Northwest, opening a wine shop on Bainbridge Island, just across the Puget Sound from downtown Seattle.

On a road trip in late 1999, he passed through the small town of Walla Walla and met a young Frenchman and winemaker.

The two men discovered their common passion for great Syrah and Charles was eventually convinced to move to Walla Walla and make his own juice. In 2001, Charles released 330 cases of his first wine, the 1999 K Syrah.

The Walla Walla Valley was now his home.

After a devastating freeze in 2004, Charles brought to life a label he had once in a dream: House Wine.

Low and behold, the label concept had never been created or trademarked, so Charles launched the legendary brand before selling it to Precept Brands in 2006.

That same year, Charles started a second brand, Charles Smith Wines. The brand was themed as “The Modernist Project,” which focuses on the way people generally consume wine today: immediately.

The intent was (and still is) to create wines to be enjoyed now, but with true typicity of both the varietal and the vineyard.

Domaine des Brosses Sancerre 2019

The Girard family have 6 different parcels of Sancerre vineyards. Their hillside vineyards are located on classic clay and chalk soils, giving the grippy, mineral style expected of true Sancerre. Domaine des Brosses has used a machine harvester to collect the grapes since 1989. This is so that the Sauvignon Blanc is brought to the winery in the coolness of night-time, thus retaining the classic citrus and gooseberry aromas and flavours of Sancerre. Pale yellow in colour. The nose is fresh and full of hay, citrus and mineral notes. The palate is medium in body with crisp lemon acidity and an appealing creamy complexity alongside the ripe peach, elderflower and mineral flavours which last well on the long finish.

Jean-Claude Bachelet Puligny Montrachet Les Aubues 2017

This is really classy in 2010, the first year with the name of the lieu-dit on the label. A beautiful floral nose, dancing fruit, charming and balanced, it possesses an excellent racy acidity and is altogether a great success. From 50-year-old vines in Les Aubues, an enclave within better known Enceigneres, this is very attractive with quite a full nose and an excellent finish.
