Chase Rhubarb & Bramley Apple Gin

William Chase was a local farmer who grew potatoes when a supermarket rejected a batch he sold them to Kettle Chips who told him they were the best they had ever used so he decided to make his own crisps and Tyrells was born.

He then discovered potatoes could also make amazing vodka and apples the base for great gin,  he also now also owns an estate in Provence making great biodynamic wines.

Rhubarb & Bramley Apple Gin is carefully crafted by blending GB gin with freshly pressed rhubarb and Bramley apple juice, straight from the farm. This tangy and tart gin pairs perfectly as a G&T.
Nose: Fresh rhubarb and apple crumble with a hint of cinnamon
Palate: Sweet rhubarb meets crisp, tangy apple, combined with notes of juniper
Finish: Tart fresh rhubarb and warming cinnamon

“Our farm is based in Herefordshire, a county that boasts some of the richest farmland in the world. It is here we grow King Edward, Lady Claire and Lady Rosetta potatoes for the distillery.

Having the distillery located on the farm allows us to keep a watchful eye over how our potatoes and apples move from field to bottle. It’s this single-estate approach that makes us different – something you can taste in our award-winning vodka.

I was hit one day with the eureka moment to turn my potatoes into chips. I spent 2002 travelling the world to source the equipment and recipe to make potato chips. By the summer, “Tyrrells” was born.

As Tyrrells grew, I was searching for the next step. In 2004 whilst travelling in the USA, looking for packaging equipment for the chips, I stumbled on a small distillery making potato vodka and thought this would be a great new chapter to life. So I returned home, thought about it and decided it would definitely be more fun making vodka. I researched the market and found it to be full of a lot of ‘twee’ marketing stories or large corporate companies. So I thought there would be a market if we could make a quality product and sell it with the provenance and pedigree.

I sourced a traditional type of still to make the vodka base but my research told me that to get the best quality, without filtering out all of the character, we needed a bespoke rectifying column. It was hard work but eventually we found a great family firm with over 100 years of experience to supply us with one.

From the idea in 2004, it took us until April fool’s day 2008 to harvest the first of our potatoes, making the first batch of vodka in June 2008. Upon tasting the very first drop from the column before filtering, I was so enamoured and proud of it, I decided to call it Chase Vodka.

And so Chase Distillery was born. The next shock was how little volume we produced: 16 tonnes of potatoes made only 1000 litres of alcohol. Which after 40 hours was very disheartening, but it is testament to the quality of our vodka. So with this supreme quality over all of the other mass produced vodka, I was sure it would work.” – Chase Distillery

Moniack Mead

Rating:
Moniack Mead is a traditional honey mead which is produced at Moniack Castle by Highland Wineries, and is said to be one of the best meads being made in modern times. Mead is one of the oldest alcoholic drinks known in history and, like all meads, Moniack Mead is produced through the process of fermenting honey. An interesting fact about mead is that it is traditionally drunk for the month after a wedding which is where the word “honeymoon” came from. Moniack Mead has a lovely, lingering and smooth flavour with elements of caramel and fermented honey. Our recommendation is that this mead is best served either chilled or if you prefer as a aperitif. 75cl bottle

Mandarine Napoleon

Mandarine Napoléon is an exquisite, well-balanced blend of mandarins and refined 10-year-old aged cognac. Dating back to the early 1800s, and its roots stemming from the hands of Napoléon Bonaparte, the liqueur’s history is as rich as its distinctive flavor. The drink was custom made for Napoléon, after the emperor came across chemist Antoine-François de Fourcroy, known for his extraordinary skill of distilling. It was not until 1892, after the two had died, that the liqueur was introduced to the public.

Williams Chase Herefordshire Elegant Crisp Gin 48%

This gin is complicated. The taste is the true taste of junipers highlighted by the citrus and the sweetness of the apples, elderflowers and hops. It has a beautiful and textured mouth feel due to the luscious organic apples and the naturally pure water taken straight from the aquifer that runs underneath their orchards. Try it with a slice of apple rather than lemon.
