Chateau des Antonin Bordeaux Superieur
Chateau des Antonin Bordeaux Superieur is an excellent value, textbook claret that has inviting aromas of cedar, blackcurrant & plum. On the palate there are delicious flavours of dark fruits & a nice lifted finish.
A blend of half Cabernet Sauvignon and half Merlot this offers great value for every-day drinking.
Chateau des Antonins has belonged to the De Roquefeuil family since the 1850s.
Located in the southern part of Graves, the château takes its name from the Antonins, a monastic order who set up the monastery in the 13th century as a centre to cure ergotism.
After phylloxera devastated the vines in the late 19th century, much of the vineyard was dug up and planted with other crops, so today only a small part of the estate remains dedicated to vines.
The vineyard Domaine des Sarrins covers 22 hectares in the village of Saint-Antonin-du-Var. In this region of Haut Var (about 50 km from the sea), the vines are grown in the valleys, but the hills at an altitude of about 250 m. The soil is mostly clay and limestone, Triassic.
When we acquired in early 95, the vineyard was planted with Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Of course, these old quality vines have been preserved. Another part of the vineyards for the production of Vin de Pays, was planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Ugni blanc.White Ugnis and Carignan (except a fig 50+) were replaced by Syrah, Mourvèdre and Rolles.
The first wine qualifies for the appellation contrôlée “Côtes de Provence”. It is sold under the name “Castle Sarrins”.
Our white wine can not benefit from the controlled appellation because it comes from a single grape variety, Rolle. It’s still a great wine, vinified and aged in barrels, sold under the name “The Sarrins” and the name “Vin de Pays du Var”. https://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&u=http://www.chateaudessarrins.com/&prev=search
Upon our first vintage – 1995 – we have decided to retain only the best part of the production of AOC and only 18,000 bottles of Château Sarrins Rosé 1995 were offered and 6,000 bottles of red, raised in new barrels were produced. Current production rises to about 60,000 bottles of Rosé, 70%, 10% red and 20% white.
