Description
Chateau Mourgues du Gres Les Galets Rouges
Chateau Mourgues du Gres Les Galets Rouges is predominantly Syrah with Grenache, a touch of Carignan and Mourvèdre.
Intense ruby in colour. Aromas of ripe red fruits with a mineral touch. A very harmonious and balanced wine with soft tannins, Chateau Mourgues du Gres Les Galets Rouges is a sublime blend of spicy red and black berry fruits.
The Syrah vines are more than forty years old; advantageous in hot years such as 2003 and 2005 when the well-established root systems could probe the clay calcareous marl in search of moisture.
A winding road meandering alongside the slopes of the “Costières” leads you to the Chateau Mourgues du Gres, in the midst of orchards and garrigue.
This former estate belonged to the Convent of the Ursulines before the French Revolution. In Provence, “Nuns” is “Mourgues” and “Grès” is “Pebbles”.
In the courtyard is a sundial with the motto “SINE SOLE NIHIL” (Nothing Without Sun) meaning that the sun ripens the grape to optimal maturity to produce balanced wines.
Drinking the Chateau Mourgues du Gres Les Galets Rouges this concept becomes clear.
François Collard an agricultural engineer and oenologist, began working at Château-Laffite in the Médoc.
In 1990 he decided to come back to the family estate to promote the local varieties of grapes in combination with the diversity of the soil, his first red vintage wine bottled in 1993 was the result of both traditional and innovative methods.
The Rhône River is situated a few miles away from the vineyards, the result is an exceptional terroir composed of flat rounded stones (“galets”) on clay limestone marls, enabling the vines to draw nutrients and moisture from the depth of the soil.
The galets flat pebbles protect the soil from evaporation and add a touch of minerality and freshness to the taste of the wines.
