Chateau Vitallis Pouilly-Fuissé Les Perrières

Chateau Vitallis Pouilly-Fuissé Les Perrières is easily identified by its crystal clear, yellow-gold hue with silver highlights. On the nose it is elegant and delicate, releasing aromas of fresh almond, buttery brioche and white flowers. The clay-limestone soils also bring a lovely minerality to the wine.

Producer

Château Vitallis is a Burgundy wine estate tucked away at the foot of the Rock of Solutré. For six generations, the Dutron family has been using considered viticultural practices to craft fine and elegant wines. They have used passion and precision to make wines from the Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint-Véran, Mâcon-Fuissé and Mâcon-Vinzelles AOPs.

The Château can trace its origins back to the 13th century. Originally built as a home for the Lord of Fuissé, it is now one of the oldest buildings in the Burgundy village. At that time, the property was already planted with vines, but not worked due to the harsh climate and repeated frosts.

The Château took the name Vitallis towards the start of 19th century when Monsieur Ange Henry Vitallis inherited the property from his parents. The former owner bequeathed his name to the property along with his coat of arms, which decorates the front gate to this day.

Almost two centuries later, the heritage of Jean Balvay survives, handed down from generation to generation. The Dutron family, who are direct descendants, still live on the estate and cultivate the vines with the same dedication and to the same exacting standards.

Winemaking

Pouilly-Fuissé ‘Les Perrières’ is made from individually selected vineyard plots. In 2013, Denis and Maxime Dutron decided to honour one of the best climats in Fuissé – Les Perrières – by creating a cuvée in its name, full of opulence and fruit.

Fermentation is left to occur naturally, on the fine lees and exclusively in oak barrels for 18 months in order to do justice to this prestigious terroir.

Domaine des Ballandors Quincy 2020

This is the village adjacent to Sancerre and Pouilly Fume where wines of similar style are made but because of Quincy’s ‘lesser’ name at much reduced cost. This wine is a testament to that; the flavours and aromas achieved in this wine are equivalent to any top flight Sancerre, with ‘grippy’ edgy grapefruit notes and steely crisp fruit. When Anton Beukes, winemaker at the Môreson Winery in South Africa, tasted this wine at supper, he said; ‘This is the wine I would love to make’ - Anton makes some very serious wines, so what an accolade! Winner of Best French White Wine at ‘France under one roof’ London 2005.
