Coddington Vineyards Pinot Gris Brut

Coddington Vineyard Pinot Gris Brut is dry and delicate. Lively with a fruity zest traditionally fermented in the bottle.

Pinot Gris is excellent for still or sparkling wines, it needs to ripen well for the wine to develop its fine aroma and its distinctive spicy flavour. A quality white grape grown widely in Europe over many centuries. Pinot Gris is known as Rulander in Gernmany, and Pinot Grigio in Italy. It is probably a mutation of Pinot Noir, and produces dark blue grapes.

The vineyard that is closest to our shop in Ledbury. Lying west of the Malvern Hills in Herefordshire, Coddington vineyard is one of the smaller commercial vineyards in the UK, it is quite literally a back-garden vineyard. Its 2 acres of vineyards, originally planted in 1985 are located on a south-facing slope to gain grapes of maximum ripeness from the warmth of the autumn sun. This is important for the production of delicate and aromatic wines.

It is also one of the most picturesque vineyards we know of. Three grape varieties are grown: Bacchus, Ortega and Pinot Gris.

Bacchus is a German white grape variety that is perhaps most notable for the production of crisp white wines in England. It is a crossing of Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner, though some experts suggest that the cross included Riesling. Bacchus wines are fresh and aromatic, showing grapey, citrus characters.

The cross was obtained in Pfalz, Germany in the 1930s, although was not sanctioned for use in commercial wines until the 1970s. Although it is most famous for its use in England, Bacchus is still planted in volume in Rheinhessen and Franken, where it occupies vineyards in locations which are too cold for the ubiquitous Riesling.

England produces some of the best expressions of Bacchus with the better results coming from cooler vineyards where yields are tightly controlled. Most growers aim for medium-sized yields, as Bacchus can overwhelm the palate if the grape’s flavor is too concentrated. Due to its herbaceous nature, the variety has been touted as England’s Sauvignon Blanc.
