Description

De Martino Legado Chardonnay

De Martino Legado Chardonnay has notes of almond and fresh citrus fruits. On the palate the wine has a very smooth mouthfeel with good acidity. This is a result of the vineyards situation in the Limari valley, an up and coming region for Chile in wine innovation.

Review

The drought between 2013 and 2015 killed some vineyards and increased the salinity of the soils. This is therefore  reflected in the wines.

Interestingly 2017 was a low-yielding year, even in young vineyards like this one planted in 2009. The juice from pressing the full clusters fermented in used oak barrels with indigenous yeasts, and only 10% of the volume underwent malolactic.

The wine then matured in barrels for 14 months. The whole Legado range shows very varietal, more so in the Chardonnay than the Sauvignon Blanc, with the chalky texture of the limestone soils.

Starting with the 2015 vintage, this wine is produced with grapes from Tabalí. Definitely great for the price. 56,498 bottles produced. Moreover it was bottled in July 2018.

De Martino won Chilean Winery of the Year in 2011.

Furthermore through a network of intellectual partnerships and vineyard acquisition, it has quickly built up a reputation for organic viticulture of the highest quality.

Now they are  farming from over 350 different vineyards.

Moreover the corporate vision focuses on sustainability, terroir, and, by logical extension, excellence.

By concentrating on the very best sites for the varieties in question: in Limari, Elqui or Maipo, De Martino now sits at the very top of the Chilean vinous hierarchy.

Peter Lehmann Margaret Semillon Quick View

Peter Lehmann Margaret Semillon 2012

While bottle ageing in the Tanunda cellars, the wine has developed an attractive vibrant green/gold colour. The bouquet shows hints of lemon flower together with some waxy, honeyed development so typical of great, aged Semillon. The grapes were picked early in the season to retain more natural acidity and the palate is dry with a zesty finish.

Jean-Claude Bachelet Puligny Montrachet Les Aubues 2017

This is really classy in 2010, the first year with the name of the lieu-dit on the label. A beautiful floral nose, dancing fruit, charming and balanced, it possesses an excellent racy acidity and is altogether a great success. From 50-year-old vines in Les Aubues, an enclave within better known Enceigneres, this is very attractive with quite a full nose and an excellent finish.

Domaine des Ballandors Quincy Quick View

Domaine des Ballandors Quincy 2018

This is the village adjacent to Sancerre and Pouilly Fume where wines of similar style are made but because of Quincy’s ‘lesser’ name at much reduced cost. This wine is a testament to that; the flavours and aromas achieved in this wine are equivalent to any top flight Sancerre, with ‘grippy’ edgy grapefruit notes and steely crisp fruit. When Anton Beukes, winemaker at the Môreson Winery in South Africa, tasted this wine at supper, he said; ‘This is the wine I would love to make’ - Anton makes some very serious wines, so what an accolade! Winner of Best French White Wine at ‘France under one roof’ London 2005.
