Delta Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
Delta Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is a wine with great concentration and a classic spectrum of flavour. It has a depth of blackcurrant notes and blackcurrant leaves on the nose with hints of peach and passionfruit. The palate is textural and mouthwatering with passionfruit and mineral flavours. Fresh acidity with underlying green herbal notes adds focus to the wine.
The Delta farm, first established in 1848, was purchased in 2000 by four partners, including winemaker Matt Thomson and David Gleave of Liberty Wines. Their specialisation in Pinot Noir sets Delta apart from the crowd in Marlborough.
It all started in Italy in 1994 when Matt Thomson arrived to work his first vintage in northern Italy. It was here that he met David Gleave, a London-based importer of wines from around the world. Over several years and during the many long car journeys between wineries in Italy, Matt and David discussed at length the potential for Pinot Noir in Marlborough. Matt also spoke with his friend and colleague Neal Ibbotson, a Marlborough pioneering viticulturalist.
Lying on the West Coast highway, the 30-hectare Delta Vineyard is planted with the best new Dijon clones of Pinot Noir and can be divided into two areas. The flatter part, closer to the road, produces approachable, younger drinking wines bottled under the ‘Delta’ label, whereas the best fruit from the hillsides that rise to around 175 metres produces the reserve style ‘Hatter’s Hill’.
The low vigour clay soils, combined with the elevation of the vineyard, the warm days, the excellent quality of the light, the cool nights and the constant breeze, make this site ideal for the production of top quality Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
The first vintage of Hatters Hill Sauvignon Blanc from Delta Vineyard was 2014 and it was an immediate award winner as Champion Sauvignon Blanc in the Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2015.
Vines are planted on a single vineyard which is part of the Dillons Point area, located at the lower Wairau Valley. It sits on free draining, deep and fertile alluvial soils adjoining saline, coastal soils. A healthy canopy is trained on a VSP system.
