Denis Jamain Les Pierres Plates Reuilly Blanc

Denis Jamain Les Pierres Plates Reuilly Blanc has a Chablis-like minerality derived from Kimmeridgian soils in the south of the Reuilly appellation. Very precise, mineral, transparent and with lovely purity. It bursts with vibrant, gooseberry fruit and tangy green apples.  It is a perfect summer aperitif or is a great fish and seafood white.

The wines of Reuilly offer a more-affordable alternative to the better-known names of the region, such as Sancerre, and are gradually gaining popularity and recognition on an international scale.

The classic Reuilly white wine is refreshing, high in acidity, with herbaceous, grassy aromas enlivened with notes of citrus.

Denis Jamain owns 15ha of vineyards in the Loire wine appellation of Reuilly, about 10% of the entire appellation. The vines are planted on gentle slopes of limestone and clay.

The estate applies the principles of la lutte raisonée. Denis works with the three permitted varieties of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.

The domaine‘s wines are vinified in a very modern, temperature-controlled winery which is equipped with thermo-regulated stainless steel vats. Each vineyard parcel is vinified separately with full traceability.

The domaine began with two hectares of vines planted by his grandfather in 1935. In the 1990s Denis managed to acquire some more parcels with good terroir, and the domain currently stands at 17 hectares, and is fully organic. Since 2011 the vineyard has been certified biodynamic.

The soils are Kimmeridgian clay/limestone, very similar to the soils in Chablis and these give the wines a similar mineral style.

Denis selects the trees from his family forest each year to make barrels with. Though he uses both stainless steel tanks and oak, Denis is very proud to be able to select special oaks from his grandfather’s forest to make his barrels. This is the concept of “local” in its purest form.

Berton Foundstone Chardonnay 2019

An appealing fruit driven wine that has aromas of candied lemon, lime and honeydew melon. The palate is a fusion of sweet citrus, peardrop and ripe melon flavours that continue to a long and zesty finish. The wine is best enjoyed with lightly fried fish or just as an aperitif.

Peter Lehmann Margaret Semillon Quick View

Peter Lehmann Margaret Semillon 2012

While bottle ageing in the Tanunda cellars, the wine has developed an attractive vibrant green/gold colour. The bouquet shows hints of lemon flower together with some waxy, honeyed development so typical of great, aged Semillon. The grapes were picked early in the season to retain more natural acidity and the palate is dry with a zesty finish.

Domaine Patrick Vauvy Touraine Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Attractively aromatic, rich dry Sauvignon showing the fruit character of fully ripe grapes. Exotic fruits in abundance on the nose and just a hint of mint. On the palate its fresh and tangy and the finish is fruity and moreish. The obvious accompaniment to asparagus with hollandaise but should be tried with goats cheese and works well with tuna dishes.

Jean-Claude Bachelet Puligny Montrachet Les Aubues 2017

This is really classy in 2010, the first year with the name of the lieu-dit on the label. A beautiful floral nose, dancing fruit, charming and balanced, it possesses an excellent racy acidity and is altogether a great success. From 50-year-old vines in Les Aubues, an enclave within better known Enceigneres, this is very attractive with quite a full nose and an excellent finish.
