Dirler Cadé Memoire

The Dirler Cadé Memoire is tribute to the founder of the domaine, Jean Dirler.

He was a visionary throughout all his activities, both as a wine enthusiast and a fervent protector of local traditions.

This wine is a unique blend of most Alsatian grape varieties, except Pinot Noir.

Beautiful aromatic nose, with elegant mineral finish. Very easy to drink.

It is very dry (only 3 g/l of residual sugar) and it goes perfectly with mildly spiced Asian cuisine, vegetarian dishes and soft cheese.

Dirler Cadé Memoire: the Producer

The Dirler family have been producing wine since 1871 in the small village of Bergholtz, near Guebwiller.

The family domaine took a further step forward in 2000 with the marriage of 5th generation Jean, son of Jean-Pierre Dirler, to Ludivine, daughter of Léon Hell-Cadé.

This took the total estate to 18 hectares, of which 42% are Grand Cru: Saering, with its clay/limestone/sandstone soils and quivering acidity; Spiegel, more sandstone/stony in its make-up, ensuring an ethereal finesse; Kessler, rich in sandy/clay/sandstone is famed for its power and ageing potential; while the sandstone/volcanic/sandy Kitterlé brims with perfumed spicy aromas on the nose and great persistence on the palate.

Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris account for over 60% of the vines, the remainder made-up of Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Pinot Noir, Sylvaner, Muscat, and Chasselas. While the vinification is essentially traditional, using both large oak foudres and stainless steel, it is in the vineyard where the most marked changes have taken place: since 1998 all the vines have been farmed organically and biodynamically.

Small amounts of brimstone flour and Bordeaux mixture, herbal teas of nettle, as well as concoctions of willow and horsetail are part of the biodynamic arsenal.

Dirler Cadé Memoire: the philosophy

Following courses in 1997 with François Bouchet, Biodynamics advisor, Jean and Jean-Pierre Dirler have decided in 1998 to convert the estate to a Biodynamic agriculture.

At that time, 14.2 acres out of the 22.3 of the Dirler estate are converted. In 1999, the last 7,4 acres (the steepest and narrower vineyards) are converted in introducing the ploughing with a draft horse in the estate culture.

From 2000, the family farm expands itself with the takeover of the half of Ludivine’s parent’s vineyard (9.8 acres).

From 2001 to 2004, the estate continues to take vineyards over to finally have 44.4 acres and convert all the plots gradually.

The estate obtained the Biological Agriculture label “AB” and the Biodynamic Agriculture label “BIODYVIN” from the 4th year of Biodynamic culture so that the estate is 100% AB and BIODYVIN from the harvest of 2007.
