Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc Vineyard combines the considerable winegrowing experience of Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, the former chief viticulturist and head winemaker at New Zealand’s Cloudy Bay.

Dog Point is situated in Marlborough, on the tip of New Zealand’s South New Zealand Wine

Once Dog Point was the name given by early European settlers to the rough patch of land where stray dogs gathered, forming an unruly pack.

Now it is both a wine label and a vineyard, set up by Ivan and Margaret Sutherland and James and Wendy Healy, after James and Ivan met working at Cloudy Bay, and it’s to Dog Point (run by another Cloudy Bay escapee, Kevin Judd), rather than Cloudy Bay, that those in the know would go for an upmarket sauvignon blanc fix.

The name Dog Point dates from the earliest European settlement of Marlborough and the introduction of sheep to the district.

These were days of few fences, of boundary riders and “boundary keeping dogs”. Shepherds’ dogs sometimes became lost or wandered off and eventually bred into a marauding pack which attacked local flocks.

Their home was a tussock and scrub covered hill, overlooking the Wairau Plains, designated by the early settlers as Dog Point. http://www.dogpoint.co.nz/dog-point/

Sula Sauvignon Blanc 2020

This wonderfully crisp and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc comes from one of India’s premium wine producers, Sula. Acclaimed for their Sauvignon Blanc grape variety it has aromas of cut grass and green peppers, bright gooseberry flavours and a hint of spice of the palate.

Peter Lehmann Margaret Semillon 2013

While bottle ageing in the Tanunda cellars, the wine has developed an attractive vibrant green/gold colour. The bouquet shows hints of lemon flower together with some waxy, honeyed development so typical of great, aged Semillon. The grapes were picked early in the season to retain more natural acidity and the palate is dry with a zesty finish.

Dobogo Tokaji Furmint 2017

Medium gold in colour with a complex array of aromas including fresh notes of lime, pear, ripe apple, quince, herbs, chamomile and a hint of spiciness. The taught acid structure balances the ripe fruit concentration and salty, mineral character, which lingers on the elegant finish. This is a young and dynamic wine, which can be enjoyed immediately or aged for several years.

Loimer Riesling 2020

A rather restrained nose of fresh apricot and white stone fruit develops into youthful lime perfumes. On the palate, the Loimer Riesling has a crunchy acidity and lots of texture. Light-bodied, the wine is balanced and has a medium to long finish.

Alpha Zeta Garganega 2019

Relatively low fermentation temperatures help preserve the fresh fruit character of the grapes. 20% was fermented in large format oak. The wine was held in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks until bottling. Clear, pale straw in colour with fresh, delicate perfumes of stoned fruit, honeysuckle and almond blossom. On the palate, it is fresh but has surprising depth and a lovely peachy fruit character. A lively, lemonyzest finish offsets the ripe fruit on the palate.

Quincy Ballandors

This is the village adjacent to Sancerre and Pouilly Fume where wines of similar style are made but because of Quincy’s ‘lesser’ name at much reduced cost. This wine is a testament to that; the flavours and aromas achieved in this wine are equivalent to any top flight Sancerre, with ‘grippy’ edgy grapefruit notes and steely crisp fruit. When Anton Beukes, winemaker at the Môreson Winery in South Africa, tasted this wine at supper, he said; ‘This is the wine I would love to make’ - Anton makes some very serious wines, so what an accolade! Winner of Best French White Wine at ‘France under one roof’ London 2005.
