Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc Vineyard combines the considerable winegrowing experience of Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, the former chief viticulturist and head winemaker at New Zealand’s Cloudy Bay.

Dog Point is situated in Marlborough, on the tip of New Zealand’s South New Zealand Wine

Once Dog Point was the name given by early European settlers to the rough patch of land where stray dogs gathered, forming an unruly pack.

Now it is both a wine label and a vineyard, set up by Ivan and Margaret Sutherland and James and Wendy Healy, after James and Ivan met working at Cloudy Bay, and it’s to Dog Point (run by another Cloudy Bay escapee, Kevin Judd), rather than Cloudy Bay, that those in the know would go for an upmarket sauvignon blanc fix.

The name Dog Point dates from the earliest European settlement of Marlborough and the introduction of sheep to the district.

These were days of few fences, of boundary riders and “boundary keeping dogs”. Shepherds’ dogs sometimes became lost or wandered off and eventually bred into a marauding pack which attacked local flocks.

Their home was a tussock and scrub covered hill, overlooking the Wairau Plains, designated by the early settlers as Dog Point. http://www.dogpoint.co.nz/dog-point/

Cave de Hunawihr Gewurztraminer Reserve 2018

Straw yellow in colour with silvery gold tints. The nose is very complex, with notes of exotic fruits (lychee, mango) and subtle aromas of white pepper. The mouth is full and very long. This is a wine with good freshness from lingering acidity balanced with a touch of residual sugar on the finish.

Aromo Viognier 2020

Full bodied white with a rich background of savoury notes, a very aromatic peach and mayblossom fruit character, but without any sweetness. No oak and fresh fruit makes this wine a real winner. The Aromo wines have a great charm and appeal and this is no exception.

Loimer Kamptal Gruner Veltliner 2020

Fine aromas of pear, green apple and a hint of exotic fruits. The Loimer Kamptal Gruner Veltliner has great, lively acidity and has a refreshing light body. Persistent fruit concentration on the palate is full of zesty apple, ripe lime and spice, with good finesse and a precise, fresh finish.

Peter Lehmann Margaret Semillon 2013

While bottle ageing in the Tanunda cellars, the wine has developed an attractive vibrant green/gold colour. The bouquet shows hints of lemon flower together with some waxy, honeyed development so typical of great, aged Semillon. The grapes were picked early in the season to retain more natural acidity and the palate is dry with a zesty finish.

A Mano Bianco 2020

Fiano gives the A Mano Bianco white peach and floral perfumes, Falanghina adds citrus blossom aromas and Verdeca lends a grapefruit character. The palate is complex and zesty, with well balanced acidity and lovely body. Citrus notes continue on the finish.

Fresh and lively aromas of apple blossom with notes of ripe pears combined with spice and almonds. Smooth and easy to drink style.

Domaine des Ballandors Quincy 2020

This is the village adjacent to Sancerre and Pouilly Fume where wines of similar style are made but because of Quincy’s ‘lesser’ name at much reduced cost. This wine is a testament to that; the flavours and aromas achieved in this wine are equivalent to any top flight Sancerre, with ‘grippy’ edgy grapefruit notes and steely crisp fruit. When Anton Beukes, winemaker at the Môreson Winery in South Africa, tasted this wine at supper, he said; ‘This is the wine I would love to make’ - Anton makes some very serious wines, so what an accolade! Winner of Best French White Wine at ‘France under one roof’ London 2005.

Domaine Langlois Chateau Saumur Blanc 2019

Chenin Blanc dominated dry and minerally with a tang of honeyed melon on the palate that leads to the crisp floral finish. The harvest is made entirely by hand yielding 60 hl/ha and 150kg of grapes produced 100 litres of juice in this vintage. Fermentation was controlled at between 18-20 degrees to preserve the precious aromas.
