Description
Domaine Berthoumieu Constance Madiran
Domaine Berthoumieu Constance Madiran a full-bodied, rustic yet supple.
Domaine Berthoumieu Constance Madiran has tarry black fruit and oak, a rustic tangle of humus and farmyard aromas, flavours of dark cherries, figs and pepper just what you would expect from the southern warm region in Madiran – France.
Domaine Berthoumieu Constance Madiran is a great rich wine to go with red meats and robust stews.
The wines of Madiran are traditionally full bodied inky wines based on the Tannat grape, the addition of Cabernets Sauvignon and Pinec gives this wine more red and black fruit to balance the structure given by the Tannat.
There are several fine growers in Madiran at the moment and Didier Barré ranks in the first echelon.
In fact, Domaine Berthoumieu is owned by Didier Barré, who took over for his father Louis in the mid-1980s.
Didier was one of many young winemakers at this time greatly inspired by Alain Brumont of Domaine Bouscasse/Chateau Montus fame. Brumont could be called the founder of modern Madiran.
Their wines are perfect expressions of the notion of terroir – they are true to themselves, uncompromising and will develop in their own time.
He even has a few rows of gnarled and knobbly 100 year old + Tannat vines. The local dialect uses the word Pacherenc, derived from paishet, for posts in a row. This refers to the modern method of planting vineyards in regular rows, using a post to support each vine.
One of the most-respected family wineries in south-west France. The Madiran region makes wines mostly from the robust and rustic Tannat grape.
It’s no coincidence that Tannat and tannin are close cousins word-wise. The 2011 vintage of the Haute Tradition offers great value in the glass. – Community Wine Reviews
