Domaine Bessa Valley Enira

Domaine Bessa Valley Enira is a big, robust Bulgarian red made in a very opulent Bordeaux style by master winemakers, with heaps of blackcurrant and spice flavours.

Enira (named after a Thracian Princess) is a Bulgarian fine wine project by Stephan von Neipperg of Ch Canon La Gaffelière in St-Emilion.

The Bessa Valley Winery is located in the Pazardjik region, just 135 Km South-East from Sofia, the capital city.

The whole project started in 1999, when businessman and wine lover, Karl-Heinz Hauptmann talked with Stephan von Neipperg about the possibility of investing together in a Bulgarian wine business.

The Bulgarian wine industry, not unlike the majority of Eastern European, suffered during the rise and fall of Communism – Gorbachachev´s desire to curb alcoholism in the USSR resulted in vines being uprooted throughout the country. http://www.bessavalley.com/index.php/en/

The strong presence of limestone in the soil of the Bessa Valley is very similar to that in Saint Emilion, which is why the particular area was chosen.

By 2005 the winery had planted 140 Ha of vineyards – 55? of Merlot, and equal amounts of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

The Wine Advocate, fully known as Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, is a global bimonthly wine publication based in the United States featuring the consumer advice of wine critic Robert M. Parker, Jr.

The newsletter publishes in excess of 12,000 reviews per year, utilizing Parker’s rating system that employs a 50-100 point quality scale. These wine ratings have a significant effect on the economic performance of the reviewed wine.

Robert Parker and the Wine Advocate team of reviewers travel the globe in search of the best wines and the best wine values with only one interest in mind — the wine consumer.

From St-Emilion star Stephen von Neipperg’s impressive Bulgarian project, a merlot-led Bordeaux-style red that balances creamy vanilla oak and ripe plum and blackcurrant fruit.

Look out, too, for Enira’s reserve bottlings, such as the very serious BV 2009.
