Domaine Chapoton Cotes du Rhone

Domaine Chapoton Cotes du Rhone is a brilliant ruby colour with cherry-red glints. It has an open nose with stewed fruit, liquorice and garrigue. Very elegant in the mouth, balanced and supple. Perfectly rounded finish with ample spicy flavors. A really good blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre and Carignan.

The history of Domaine Chapoton goes back to the reign of Louis XIV although the wines of the region have been known since Roman times.

Current owners of Domaine Chapoton are Annika and Serge Remusan who took over the farm in 1981, added a somewhat piece-meal winery and considerable savoir faire. Domaine Chapoton is now spread over 60 hectares and four villages and is seen as one of the finest winemakers in the region, exploiting the limestone terroir of the hillside of the Massif d’Uchaux to make expressive and elegant red wines.

The domaine owns plantings of predominantly Grenache (some over 60 years old)  Syrah and Carignan, complemented with a small  proportion of Mourvedre, Cinsault, Marsanne, Viogner, Roussanne and Cournoise.

The beautiful country house of Chapoton, of which the origins go back to the 18th century, is situated at the foot of the picturesque village of Rochegude. The vinification cellar has been installed, partly within the ancient building, but a new section is in the process of being constructed.

The wines of Rochegude had already been appreciated during the roman era ( a decree by Emperor Domitien alludes to this ). A bust of an antique statue, probably Bacchus, has been discovered buried in a vineyard. The vineyards continue to produce wines of renown; during the 17th century, the wine was know in the United States thanks to the Marquis of Arquéria, the lord of Rochegude who supplied President Jefferson.
