Domaine Coche Bizouard Meursault Les Chevalieres

Domaine Coche Bizouard Meursault Les Chevalieres is bee wax and honeysuckle-scented and is tightly wound and pure with excellent richness and depth as well as vibrant acidity.

Flavours of toasted bread infused with tangy lemon are found throughout its personality.

Alain Coche – a cousin of Jean-François Coche-Dury – lives with his family in the La Velle quarter of Meursault, not far from Bernard Michelot.

His 9ha domaine situated around the village of Meursault comprises 40 different parcels of vines, which are roughly divided equally between red and white.

The vines have an average age of 30 to 40 years, with over 60% being 55 years plus.

The harvesting, done manually, is generally later than other vignerons in this area, sometimes by as much as a week.

The reds are not destalked, and both the whites and reds undergo a very long slow fermentation.

The wines are then put into barrique, of which, as a general rule, 25% is new, for 18 to 20 months.

Coche’s wines are highly individual in style – they are designed to be aged for at least 5 to 10 years before being drunk, but will subsequently develop into some of the most well-balanced, beautifully structured wines of the appellation.

Meursault is a large village in the Cote de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy.

Its wines are regarded as highly as those of its southern neighbor Puligny-Montrachet, despite Meursault not having any Grand Cru vineyards to speak of.

Rather than any one world-class site, it is Meursault’s reliably high-quality Premier Cru and commune-level wines that are responsible for its good reputation.

The commune’s wines are renowned for being among the richer, more full-bodied Burgundy whites, with tasting notes commonly citing notes of butter, almonds and grilled hazelnuts alongside the finer citrus fruit and mineral elements.

Jean-Claude Bachelet Puligny Montrachet Les Aubues 2017

This is really classy in 2010, the first year with the name of the lieu-dit on the label. A beautiful floral nose, dancing fruit, charming and balanced, it possesses an excellent racy acidity and is altogether a great success. From 50-year-old vines in Les Aubues, an enclave within better known Enceigneres, this is very attractive with quite a full nose and an excellent finish.

Attractively aromatic, rich dry Sauvignon showing the fruit character of fully ripe grapes. Exotic fruits in abundance on the nose and just a hint of mint. On the palate its fresh and tangy and the finish is fruity and moreish. The obvious accompaniment to asparagus with hollandaise but should be tried with goats cheese and works well with tuna dishes.
