Domaine Jean Fournier Marsannay Es Chezots
Domaine Jean Fournier Marsannay Es Chezots has a nose of wild cherries, liquorice and spice. On the palate it has raspberries, pomegranate and violets and with a lovely mineral quality. It has crunchy redcurrants too with a good depth and length of flavour.
Domaine Jean Fournier, run by Laurent Fournier, one of the top growers in the Côte de Nuits’ most northern outpost. The domaine extends over 16 hectares in the appellations of Marsannay, Fixin, Cotes de Nuits Villages and Gevrey-Chambertin, although we have chosen to focus solely on the wines from Marsannay itself, where they hold vines in three of the best sites; Les Es Chezots, Le Clos du Roy and Les Longeroies.
They have been certified organic since the 2008 vintage, having farmed organically since Laurent took over the running of the domaine from his father in 2004. Laurent is interested in Biodynamics and expects to reach certified status ‘little by little’. Stylistically, the wines are fresh, fruit-driven and fine with well-integrated oak and high-quality tannins. Definitely one to watch for the future.
He is moving towards 350-litre barrels to avoid the overt taste of new wood while still letting the wine breathe through the staves.
Marsannay is the most northern appellation of the Cote de Nuits sub-region of Burgundy. Encompassing the villages of Marsanny-la-Cote, Chenove and Couchey, the communal appellation is unique in Burgundy for covering red, white and rose wine.
Often referred to as the Porte d’Or (‘Golden Gate’) to the Cote de Nuits, Marsannay – and particularly the village of Chenove – is being slowly engulfed by the southwards expansion of Dijon. As Burgundy’s largest city and its administrative center, Dijon has a population of about a quarter of a million people; its residential, commercial and industrial developments are migrating further south into the wine-growing lands of the northern Cote d’Or each year
