Description

Domaine la Croix Montjoie Irancy

Domaine la Croix Montjoie Irancy has a beautiful intense purple colour, nice dark cherry aromas, this wine is very pleasant and easy to drink but the structure is complex and the mouth powerful. This is a structured wine, with a crisp precision, rather than the softer Pinots from further south.

Domaine La Croix Montjoie was established in 2009, and was named after a cross at the crossroads of Vezelay, which lies between Chablis and Beaune. This cross signals the spot where pilgrims coming from Avallon first caught sight of Vézelay and felt overjoyed.

The estate has ten acres of vineyards overlooking the basilica and the foothills of the Morvan and the winery occupies an old farm once part of the commune’s castle. Chardonnay is grown here, with an ideal location of a south/south-east facing hillside and stony clay and limestone rich soil. The grapes are cultivated to make the most of the naturally occurring seasons, including the harsh winters and cool summer nights.

Pinot Black Irancy is also grown, slightly further north of Vezelay. The vineyards and building management are family run, with the help of close friends, and all are involved in the ongoing development of the business.

Hand picked and destemmed harvest, 12 months aging in old casks and vats.

Irancy is a village in the north-western corner of the Burgundy, France, just a short distance to the west of Chablis. Its Irancy appellation was created in 1999, specifically for red wines made from Pinot Noir, with a permitted 10% addition of Cesar.

Located a latitude of almost 48°N, Irancy is one of France’s most northerly red-wine appellations. Although Champagne, 100 miles to the north, grows a significant quantity of Pinot Noir grapes, these are used in sparkling white wines, whose style depends on a certain level of under-ripeness. Alsace is also a little further north than Irancy, but Alsace is hardly a region famed for its red wines, and has no red-specific appellations.
