Vineyards

Domaine la Soufrandise is located in Fuissé, in the centre of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. They have seven hectares of vineyards (six in Pouilly-Fuissé and one in Macon-Fuissé), which are spread over 30 different parcels, over half of which are more than 45 years old. This arrangement provides Nicolas with multiple options for blending his flagship Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes. The vines are planted on limestone-clay soil, which lends both power and bright acidity to the wines. The grapes are harvested by hand at a later than average date to capture the ripe, exotic fruit flavours.

Vinification

The grapes were gently pressed using a pneumatic press to retain the delicate aromatics. The must was transferred to a mix of stainless-steel tanks and oak barrels, 50% of which were new. Fermentation took place using only indigenous yeast and the wine went through malolactic fermentation. The wine aged in tank and oak for 10-11 months, with occasional batonnage, depending on the vintage. The wine was fined using bentonite and bottled in August following harvest.

Producer

The Melin family have owned Domaine la Soufrandise, which is located in the heart of Fuissé, since the 1850s. When the lease ran out in 1986, Nicolas Melin and his wife Françoise decided to take over the domaine with no previous winemaking or viticulture experience. Nicolas learnt on the job while studying oenology at Dijon on the side. Today Nicolas is the 6th generation of the Melin family to run the estate. His attitude towards biodiversity and meticulous attention to detail, which stem from his background in engineering and forestry, have resulted in a switch to sustainable vineyard management.
