Domaine la Soufrandise Pouilly Fuisse Vielles Vignes

Domaine la Soufrandise have a reputation for making intensely flavoured wines from Pouilly Fuisse, and Domaine la Soufrandise Pouilly Fuisse Vielles Vignes is no exception.

Using old-vine Chardonnay, Soufrandise have kept the oak in check, allowing the rich fruit to come to the fore, a great Burgundian white, made with prodigious skill and displaying good concentration of flavour.

Domaine la Soufrandise has nearly 180 years of history behind it and has been owned by the Melin family since the 1850s.

Until 1986  the vineyard was leased and when the lessee suddenly passed away the Melins  themselves decided to have a go themselves.

The current vignerons Nicolas and François Melin took over with no experience or knowledge of viticulture or winemaking.

Nicolas, who takes the lead in the winemaking activities of the domaine, comes from a background in engineering and forestry but hired himself to the University of Dijon’s oenology department and did some courses while learning on the job.

The estate is situated in the centre of the appellation and is quite small at only 6 hectares.

Their stength is in the age of the vines (half are more than 45 years old) and that they own 20 seperate plots giving many different styles for blending our selection.

Although not organic the vineyards are treated to with the maximum respect, spraying is kept to a minimum and the only fertiliser used is manure. Grass is grown between the vines to keep down weeds and weeding is done mechanically.

No spraying is done within 60 days of harvest to avoid any residue on the grapes and leaves are thinned by hand to keep the grapes healthy to avoid any need to spray.

Fermentation is allowed to occur spontaneously at low temperatures and is slow, the wine is matured on the lees for 10 months to maximise flavour.
