Description
Falconhead Hawkes Bay Syrah
Falconhead Hawkes Bay Syrah has a deep aroma of bright raspberry and cherry cola fruit, with hints of vanilla and white pepper spice.
The palate of Falconhead Hawkes Bay Syrah is medium bodied with wonderful balance and fine length and tannin.
Moderate yields and warm dry ripening conditions allowed our 2013 Syrah fruit to be harvested in optimal condition and flavour ripeness.
The fruit was harvested from our Tantallon vineyard in the Bridge Pa sub region of Hawkes Bay.
The soils of the area are the result of deposits of river soils from ancient floods and changes in the river course over time.
These pebbly, mineral rich soils reflect heat and are very free draining making them ideal for growing Syrah.
A winemaking regime of moderate tannin extraction and oak use allows this wine to highlight the exceptional fruit purity gained from the vineyard and season.
Maturation for 12 months in new and used French oak barriques has helped to further soften the wine.
The wine was bottled, without fining, in July 2014.
Falconhead’ is one of the new wine labels launched by John Coney for ‘The Wine Portfolio’, his collection of brands which started when he purchased Morton Estate in 1995.
The development of the ‘Riverview’ vineyard in Hawke’s Bay, plus other vineyard acquisitions in Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough have been paralleled by the greater commitment to sparklings wines and the introduction of the ‘Nikau Point’, ‘Penny Lane’, ‘Southern Cross’ and ‘Cathedral Cove’ bottlings.
Having sold the ‘Morton Estate’ brand, ‘Falconhead’, the name referring to the New Zealand falcon, which resides in Hawke’s Bay and plays an active role in pest control of the company’s vineyards.
Here, I review the new 2013 ‘Falconhead’ releases, a Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from Marlborough, and Chardonnay, Syrah and Bordeaux-blend from Hawke’s Bay. www.wineportfolio.co.nz
