Morellino di Scansano Riserva

Morellino di Scansano Riserva represents the roots of Fattoria Le Pupille.

It is medium to full bodied with ripe tannin and notes of marasca cherry from the Sangiovese grape. This is coupled with aromatic hints that pays homage to the Mediterranean brushwood.

It is the first wine being produced and commercialized within the newly created Morellino di Scansano production disciplinary. Therefore it is paving the way to a profound bond with the appellation.

There were no vineyards in the area, but cork oaks, wheat, mediterranean woods, the most classical scenery of a Maremma landscape of former days.

The name Fattoria Le Pupille is unequivocally tied to the production of red wines. Sangiovese, the grapevine which can be considered prince of the property, embodies 70% of the vineyards.

Malvasia Nera and Alicante are also present, adding up to 10%, three historic varieties of the territory. Meanwhile on the ‘confrontational’ aspect of the territory prevails a 4% of Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, Syrah 2% and another 2% of Cabernet Franc.

There are 9 hectares of vineyards for the white grape varieties: Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

In those times there was no recognized dignity of Maremma as a territory with great viticultural potentials. While Morellino Di Scansano was a pleasant wine, surely it did not aspire to compare itself with great Italian denominations.

However, everything changed at Le Pupille thanks to the enthusiasm and intuition of Elisabetta Geppetti. A young student at the time, she had foreseen great productive potential in the countryside she loved, where she spent her summer holidays in her family home.

Today Fattoria Le Pupille covers 75 hectares of vineyards. It makes over 500,000 bottles every year, with a presence in the markets of four continents and an undisputed role as Ambassador of Maremma.
