Fettercairn Fior

Fettercairn Fior, tastes of dark chocolate, coffee beans and peat smoke, with nutmeg, mint, citrus fruits and truffle.

Fettercairn is a whisky distillery in Fettercairn situated under the Grampian foothills in the Howe of Mearns, Fettercairn town’s name is loosely based on the phrase ‘the foot of the mountain’.

Fior means pure or true in Gaelic, and this no-age-statement bottling launched in summer 2010 is something of a rebirth for the much-maligned Fettercairn distillery.

Fettercairn Fior is described by the producers as tasting of dark chocolate, coffee beans and peat smoke, with nutmeg, mint, citrus fruits and truffle. The finish is said to be of sherry trifle, marzipan and pineapple.

Fettercairn is a whisky distillery in Fettercairn. Situated under the Grampian foothills in the Howe of Mearns, Fettercairn town’s name is loosely based on the phrase ‘the foot of the mountain’.

Fettercairn is owned by Whyte & Mackay Distillers

Fettercairn Distillery has been in operation since 1824, making it one of Scotland’s oldest malt whisky distilleries.

The distillery is snugly tucked away at the foot of the Cairngorms from which it takes spring water supplies.

This area is one of Scotland’s most fertile regions, and is why Fettercairn is hidden amongst its forests and glens.

These distinct characteristics combine to produce a balanced malt whisky with a fine character.

Fettercairn Distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Ramsay, owner of the Fasque estate, who converted a corn mill at Nethermill into a distillery.

After losing his fortune, Alexander was forced to sell the estate to the Gladstone family in 1829.

John Gladstone’s son William Gladstone, went on to become Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer and was instrumental in passing various reforms on the taxation of whisky.

Today the distillery’s product forms an important component in Whyte & Mackay’s blended whisky –
