Description

Sweet and macerated fruit on the nose, initially with a little confectionery and violets, nevertheless very traditional with plenty of fruit, a moderate substance and a gently creamy midpalate. There is plenty of peppery grip, good acidity and a very firm structure. All in all though it has a nice style, with good substance to it, plenty of dark, tobacco-laced fruits and an attractive roasted-herb edge

Fonseca traces its origins to 1815. Fonseca Guimaraens was then founded in 1822 when Manuel Pedro Guimaraens acquired the majority share of the Fonseca & Monteiro company holdings. http://www.fonseca.pt/en/vineyards/

Not long after this purchase, Guimaraens, a supporter of the liberal cause in the 'War of the Two Brothers' was forced to flee Portugal hidden in an empty port wine cask.

He settled in England, where his company remained based until 1927, when the headquarters of the firm returned to Portugal.

Throughout the generations, the Fonseca secret has been passed on to the next family member, who imparts richness and structure of both dimension and finesse across the range.

The current custodian is David Guimaraens, who with his flawless winemaking and viticultural track record expresses the very best of each vintage.

The two Pinhão Valley estates of Quinta do Cruzeiro and Quinta de Santo António, have supplied Fonseca for over a hundred years.

Quinta do Panascal in the Távora Valley has a more recent association with Fonseca, but its wines perfectly complement those of the two Pinhão Valley properties as well as producing an exceptional single-quinta Vintage Port made exclusively from grapes grown on the estate.

The unique terroir of each quinta contributes its own distinctive character to the Fonseca Vintage Port blend. Cruzeiro provides the dense core of black fruit and tannin.

This is enveloped in the rich succulent jammy flavours and velvety texture of the wines of Panascal and overlaid by the exotic heady scents of Santo António.

The fusion of the wines of these three diverse properties explains the multi-layered and multi-dimensional quality of Fonseca Vintage Ports and their ability to continue releasing surges of opulent complex aroma over decades of ageing in bottle.
