Fonseca Crusted Port

Tasting Note – Powerful aromatic bouquet. Dark berry fruits on the nose and mouth.

Great layers of complexity and flavour. Plump raisin, spice, eucalyptus notes as well as the berry fruit flavours. An elegant and finely balanced wine.

Fonseca Crusted Port is a rare traditional style of port blended and bottled with no filtration to allow potential for further ageing in the bottle. Rich and full-bodied in style.

Fonseca Crusted Port is a rare, traditional style of Port wine and Fonseca is one of the few firms that continue to produce it. Fonseca Crusted Port

Fonseca Crusted Port is a blend of full bodied wines which spend four years ageing in large wooden vats, the wines are then bottled with no filtration and then cellared for three years before being released for sale.

As the name indicates, it will form a ‘crust’ or sediment in the bottle and should be decanted before being served. The formation of the crust is a natural process that occurs in the finest full bodied ports.

It is an indication that the wine will continue to improve in bottle and develop its aroma and character with age.

Fonseca Crusted is selected from the finest ports from the top quality Cima Corgo area of the Douro Valley and only made in small quantities.

Fonseca traces its origins to 1815. Fonseca Guimaraens was then founded in 1822 when Manuel Pedro Guimaraens acquired the majority share of the Fonseca & Monteiro company holdings.

Not long after this purchase, Guimaraens, a supporter of the liberal cause in the ‘War of the Two Brothers’ was forced to flee Portugal hidden in an empty port wine cask.

He settled in England, where his company remained based until 1927, when the headquarters of the firm returned to Portugal.

Throughout the generations, the Fonseca secret has been passed on to the next family member, who imparts richness and structure of both dimension and finesse across the range.

The current custodian is David Guimaraens, who with his flawless winemaking and viticultural track record expresses the very best of each vintage.

Fonseca Terra Prima

Silky-smooth aromas of crushed red berry fruits and chocolate with little herbal nuances. On the palate that herbal quality is still there but some pure, velvety, cherry and plum fruit fills in nicely, the subtle sweetness developing but staying balanced by a certain acidity and a fairly nimble, lighter-bodied character. A spicy finish too in a style that is not heavy and very sippable. 89/100 Tom Cannavan, www.wine-pages.com

Sweet and macerated fruit on the nose, initially with a little confectionery and violets, nevertheless very traditional with plenty of fruit, a moderate substance and a gently creamy midpalate. There is plenty of peppery grip, good acidity and a very firm structure. All in all though it has a nice style, with good substance to it, plenty of dark, tobacco-laced fruits and an attractive roasted-herb edge
