Fonseca Siroco White Port

In most countries, Ports arrive at the end of the meal. The exception is white Port, especially the drier style which makes an excellent aperitif. So, what can we say about the Fonseca Siroco White Port?

It is a blend of classic white Port grape varieties, predominantly Malvasia Fina with smaller proportions of Gouveio, Viosinho, Rabigato and Arinto, grown on the cooler, higher vineyards of the Douro Valley.

To achieve its crisp dry finish, the wine ferments for longer than other styles of Port before it is fortified.

Ageing in small oak vats gives Siroco its smoothness as well as its attractive ripe fruit flavours and delicate nuttiness.

Siroco makes an elegant, stylish and versatile aperitif, equally at home before an alfresco meal on a warm summer day or on a cold winter evening in front of the fire.

Pale, straw colour. A superb balance of ripe fruit, delicate acidity and elegant notes of wood aging. Full and fruity on the palate this wine has a glorious lingering finish and an attractive, refreshing crispness.

Fonseca Siroco White Port: food matchings

Fonseca Siroco White Port is a superb aperitif when served chilled in a white wine glass.

Why not try it also over ice in a high ball glass and topped up with tonic water and a leaf of fresh mint or a slice of lemon as a refreshing summer long drink.

With salted almonds and some plump, juicy olives, it is the perfect aperitif.

But why stop there?
Siroco brings an extra dimension of flavour to many dishes, for example try it as a finishing touch to a warm leek and potato soup or a cool summer gazpacho.

Use it in place of white wine to provide an original aromatic accent when cooking clams or mussels.

Mas Amiel Maury Vintage Rouge 2019

Mas Amiel Maury Vintage Rouge is made in the same style as the rimage wines of Banyuls. From 100% Grenache Noir grown on the southfacing broken schists and marne soils and yields of 25 hl/ha, the grapes are subsequently sorted, destemmed and vinified in the normal way. The alcohol is added while the wine is still in the vat (mutage sur les grains), which slows down the final fermentation, allowing a longer period of maceration and thereby conferring greater richness. This Maury is ruby with violet tints and the nose eloquently expresses framboise, cherry and crème-de-cassis. It is smooth in the mouth, the red fruits reinforced by bitter chocolate and spice as well as fine tannins. 0.75l bottle. This fleshy, yet refreshing, fruity wine is a perfect match for red fruit or chocolate desserts. It is a seductive, pure Grenache varietal that also pairs well with sweet and sour dishes.

Fonseca Terra Prima

Silky-smooth aromas of crushed red berry fruits and chocolate with little herbal nuances. On the palate that herbal quality is still there but some pure, velvety, cherry and plum fruit fills in nicely, the subtle sweetness developing but staying balanced by a certain acidity and a fairly nimble, lighter-bodied character. A spicy finish too in a style that is not heavy and very sippable. 89/100 Tom Cannavan, www.wine-pages.com
