Background:-
Founded in 1880, the Franz Haas winery is a family-owned property that has passed from father to first-born son, Franz Haas.
Today, Franz Haas is the seventh generation to grow grapes on this beautiful estate, nestled at the foothills of the Alps.
He continues to focus on the grape varieties which best express the wonderful character, varied microclimates and unique terroir of the Alto Adige, but shortly after taking over the winery in 1986.
Franz Haas began making significant changes aimed at enhancing quality, including planting new vineyards with dramatically increased vine density.
He also reduced yields to concentrate flavours in the fruit. The quality and longevity of the resulting wines have exceeded expectations.
Terroir:-
Franz vinifies grapes from 50 hectares of vineyards of which 28 are estate-owned or rented and the balance owned by long-standing grape growers.
The altitudes of the vineyards range from 240-800m above sea level.
The soil’s components vary from sand and clay to limestone, while, given the unique landscape, microclimates vary dramatically between vineyards and often within the same vineyard.
Franz is notoriously difficult to please when it comes to his own wines.
This dissatisfaction manifests itself in levels of angst that wouldn’t be out of place in a Russian novel.
But it also produces wines of rare purity and balance, such is his desire to grow good grapes and preserve the flavours during winemaking. Franz Haas
However, it is only with Franz, the current proprietor, that they have begun to produce and bottle quality wines. Franz studied at Geisenheim before working as a broker of Italian wines into the German market.
After several years, he took over the running of the family business.
Franz Haas goes to tremendous lengths to grow good grapes and then strives to preserve the flavours of the fruit during winemaking.
The wines that he produces are infused with great character and show a rare purity and balance on the palate.
