Gaja Barolo Dagromis is a full bodied 100% Nebbiolo red aged for a total of 24 months in oak, around half in barrique and half in old oak casks. A full bodied, powerful and floral wine, with well integrated hints of licquorice and herb. Juicy acidity with nice round tannins.

Only Piero Antinori can claim to have done as much as Angelo Gaja in creating and promoting the concept of ‘quality’ Italian wine. His wines from Barbaresco and, latterly, Barolo have been thrilling wine lovers for over four decades, and have inspired what was once a younger generation of producers to lower yields and clean up their cellars. “We are all children of Gaja,” Elio Altare once said. Gaja’s myriad vinous offspring have transformed the rugged Langhe hills from a becalmed backwater to one of the most exciting wine regions in the world in the space of three decades.

Today, the Gaja winery is run by Angelo, his wife Lucia and, increasingly, their children: Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni. The wines have never been better. Since the move back to DOP status for his cru wines (‘Sorì San Lorenzo’, ‘Costa Russi’ and ‘Sorì Tildìn’ in Barbaresco and ‘Sperss’ in Barolo) with the 2013 vintage, the wines have displayed an ineffable elegance, and remain among the very best of the region.

The winery now has 103 hectares of vineyard in the Langhe. In addition to his Nebbiolo-based wines, he also makes a very fine Sauvignon Blanc ‘Alteni di Brassica’ and an outstanding Chardonnay ‘Gaia & Rey’. ‘Sperss’, from a vineyard in Serralunga that neighbours Massolino’s ‘Margheria’ and ‘Vigna Rionda’, is exceptional, rivalled only by ‘Sorì Tildìn’ and ‘Sorì San Lorenzo’ in our annual tasting of the Gaja wines.
