Greywacke Botrytis Pinot Gris

Greywacke Botrytis Pinot Gris is a luscious sweet wine with elegant structure & a clean lingering finish.

Offering a refreshing mouthfeel, this richly flavoured wine has balanced notes of dried fruit, honey and dark orange marmalade.

Producer

Greywacke is the exciting solo venture of Kevin Judd, who was formerly the chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay Winery. Chiefly he was instrumental in the international recognition which New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc enjoys today.

The debut wine under the Greywacke label was the 2009 vintage with his Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

This displayed the hallmarks of Kevin’s famed style: ripe fruit, fine balance, great concentration and superb varietal intensity. http://greywacke.com/docs/greywacke_about_2015.pdf

The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura.

Truly named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded Greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard.

Kevin registered the name in 1993 with the vague notion that he might use it on a wine label of his own.

Notably this quality focused winemaking venture sources fruit from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys.

Moreover these prime viticultural sites are cultivated using yield restricting vineyard management techniques and intense canopy management regimes.

A number of the vineyards are owned by the Sutherland family, while complementary grape parcels are acquired from additional select sites, all located within these sub-regions.

The wines are made by Kevin at Dog Point Winery in the lower Brancott Valley. The facility has been extended to him by long-standing friends and industry colleagues, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy.

Grapes

Primarily the Greywacke portfolio is primarily based on two varieties: Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

In addition there are also limited edition releases of Chardonnay and three aromatic varieties: Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewurztraminer.

Kevin’s signature vineyard photographs provide the unmistakable identity of the Greywacke range.
