Heinrich Burgenland St Laurent is deep ruby-garnet in colour with a soft touch violet tints. The nose delivers aromas of dark berry fruit, fine vegetal spiciness, a touch of licorice and a bit of grapefruit zest. The palate is juicy with notes of fine forest berry jam and delicate citrus fruit. Fresh acidity and a lovely cherry finish. Harmonious and animated – a perfect food companion.

Gernot Heinrich has 60 hectares of vines in Gols, Burgenland, which is Austria’s easternmost province, lying only a few kilometres from the Hungarian border. Gernot’s vinous travels in Bordeaux, Spain, California and Italy convinced him that his best approach in this continental climate was to use indigenous grapes such as Blaufränkisch, St Laurent and Zweigelt to make the highest quality, most characteristic wines he could.

The 60 hectares of vineyard lie at 140m above sea level in the Wagram area of Burgenland, where the hot summers, continental climate and south facing aspect favour the production of ripe, opulent reds. The St Laurent is planted on the light loam and limey gravel soils of the higher slopes. All the vineyards have been farmed according to biodynamic principles since early 2006, with the wines officially certified from the 2009 vintage.

Saint-Laurent is an aromatic black grape variety that is most commonly found in Austria’s Niederosterreich and Burgenland regions, is the most widely planted red variety in the Czech Republic and is gaining popularity in Germany and other cooler winegrowing nations. Saint-Laurent has long been thought to be related to Pinot Noir. Some DNA profiling suggests that it is even a direct offspring, but this finding remains unsubstantiated and debate continues on whether there is a relationship. Saint-Laurent wines tend to be dark purple in color, structured yet silky with a characteristic dark-cherry flavor (similar to Pinot Noir). Blackberries, smoke and spice are also commonly exhibited. The wines benefit from oak aging and show good aging ability.
