Description

The Ileach Peated Islay Malt

The Ileach Peated Islay Malt is robustly peaty, with an unmistakable breath of the seashore, the Ileach is a true whisky of Islay.

The Ileach Peated Islay Malt 40% is a peaty single malt from a secret Islay distillery, this has received rave reviews from whisky critics and has a solid core of peat and a lovely rich style.

The Vintage Malt Whisky Co. was founded in 1992 by Brian Crook, an honours graduate in Food Science with twenty years experience in the malt whisky industry, latterly as Export Director for one of Scotland’s principal distillers.

The aim was to produce a range of malt whiskies from Scotland’s finest distilleries Ileach

“The name The Ileach Peated Islay Malt is self explanatory. The version at drinking strength was more than okay.

This one has a cask strength of 58%, which is considerate. No word on the distillery, although many believe it to be a young Lagavulin. I am not so sure.

Undoubtedly many sherry casks were used in the mix, for besides seaweeds and peat, this nose also offers quite some fruit and even chocolate. Pears and apricots, followed by figs and dates.

Then the peat returns and adds goat cheese and wet earth. A touch medicinal, but not overly so. You know those dades that are wrapped in bacon? Yep, that’s it, but in liquid form.

It is mouth coating with a good body. Immediately very powerful peat and spices with loads of maritime elements (my brain shouts ‘Laphroaig!’). Then the fruit kicks in. Wonderfully sweet, making this whisky quite complex. I am impressed.

The long finish is warm and lingers with a battle between sweet and salt. It leaves the mouth as good as completely dry”.

Clynelish 14 YO

You can almost taste the coastal flora in Clynelish Single Malt Scotch Whisky, with its crisp, medium- bodied, mustard-fresh style. Although you won’t find Islay’s powerful smokiness here, there is just a trace of it lingering. It’s said Clynelish whisky is closer to an Island style than other mainland malts, with a complex and fragrant nose and an agreeable long finish that leaves a lingering fresh-fruity flavour. Not a heavyweight, it is yet deliciously drinkable, and perfect as an aperitif.

Dalmore 18 YO 43%

Dalmore's stunning 18 year old Highland malt is as rich, fruity and spicy as you could ever want from a Dalmore. Kudos to Dalmore for creating another veritable chocolate orange of a whisky - a surefire hit, and great for the colder months. It is aged for 14 years in American oak, followed by three years in Matusalem sherry butts, before a final year in sherry butts. One for the sherry monsters amoungst you.
