Description

Le Ballon Syrah

Le Ballon Syrah is organically produced, but not yet certified.

It has lovely red and black fruit notes, along with sweet spices. Medium bodied, and very easy-drinking.

It goes well with stir fried beef, charcuterie and medium-aged cheese.

The Winemaking of Le Ballon Syrah

Stainless steel fermentation.

No oak used during the entire vinification process to enhance the fruitiness and freshness of Syrah.

Le Ballon Syrah: the Grape Variety

Some of the world’s most famous Syrah wines are the peppery, earthy reds of the northern Rhône, specifically of the Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Joseph appellations.

Generally speaking, the South of France is able to provide excellent condition to grow this amazing grape variety.

While Hermitage has been held in high regard for many centuries, the “roasted slopes” of Côte-Rôtie have emerged as a leading source of Syrah only towards the end of the 20th Century.

One of Syrah’s most valued assets is its ability to produce wines capable of aging and improving over many decades.

The most valued appellation in this regard is the hill of Hermitage; its name is so respected that for many years it was used as a synonym for Syrah in Australia.

A well-built Hermitage requires 10 years or more to relax into its plummy, spicy fullness, and will reward cellaring for a further decade at least.

The Appellation of Le Ballon Syrah

The appellation Vin de Pays d’Oc is part of the region of Languedoc-Roussillon from France which include Le Ballon and its 6 cuvées.

Spread over 42,800 ha, this region is 2.4 million hectolitres per year.

Pays d’Oc is the IGP for red, white and rosé wines that are made in a large area on the southern coast of France.

The catchment area for the IGP corresponds roughly to the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region – one of the largest winegrowing areas in France.

The region covers all the wines that are not made under the strict laws that govern the AOC-level appellations in the regions: among them Corbières, Minervois and the Languedoc appellation itself.
