Matetic Vineyards EQ Chardonnay

Matetic Vineyards EQ Quartz Chardonnay has brilliant golden straw colour. The nose has citric and tropical fruit aromas that blend beautifully with flavours of honey and peaches, along with its distinct salty minerality, their terroir’s unique expression. On the palate is a full, voluptuous wine displaying freshness and volume without an overtly up front acidity.

Ideal companion for fish, white meat, seafood, pasta and mature cheeses.

The grapes for their Matetic Vineyards EQ Quartz Chardonnay are sourced from their own organic and biodynamic vineyards planted with clonal selections, in the Rosario Valley. The soil consists of granitic sand texture and clay on the slopes, with good porosity when the soils deepen. Each vineyard and selection of clones (95, 76 and 130) experience varying degrees of sun exposure. This allows the grapes to develop unique nuances and characteristics in the wines, showing more tropical flavors if the fruit have been exposed to the sun, and mineral notes with nice acidity if they have been protected from sunlight. The naturally lowered yields – around 1,5 kilos per plant – and the coastal influence favor a slow ripening process and intense aromatic concentration.

The grapes were hand-picked and transported to the winery, where the bunches were carefully cooled and selected. The grapes were whole bunch pressed to obtain high quality juice at low pressure, ensuring low turbidity but higher freshness. The fermentation was done in French oak barrels from Burgundy, of different sizes: 228, 300 and 400 liters. Fermentation was conducted only by indigenous yeasts, in order to obtain a real expression of the vineyard typicity, enhancing the complexity and elegance of the final blend. The wine was finished with only a percentage of malolactic fermentation, to enhance the mouth feeling and aromatic complexity. The wine was aged in barrels on fine lees and aged for 11 months with 6 months lees stirring to get volume, roundness and a well-integrated wood.

The name EQ comes from the word EQUILIBRIO (Spanish word for Balance) and represents their commitment to nature, by pursuing a perfect balance between the grapevines, soil and climate of their vineyards. EQ offers balanced wines with outstanding quality and elegance. Delivering great complexity with nuanced layers of flavours, EQ wines have a fine structure that guarantees a great ageing potential.

Canopy and water management allows a healthy balance between grapes production and growth. The low yields results in fruit with higher concentration of colour, aroma and flavour.

The Matetic family arrived in Chile some 100 years ago from what is now Croatia and acquired large haciendas in the southern tip of the country which they used for sheep and dairy farming.

It was in 1999 that the family bought the estate in the San Antonio Valley and turned their hand to winemaking.

They are now one of the most revered wine producers in Chile and have been awarded a plethora of prestigious awards.

The winery was designed in collaboration with the architect Lawrence Odfjell and built in 2004 and relies on a gravitational flow design that optimises management of the grapes brought in from the nearby vineyards, which complements the organic and biodynamic principles that are followed at the estate.

The proximity to the Pacific Ocean benefits their vineyards. They experience cool nights, morning mist and sea breezes during afternoons. This is a cool and dry region, where rains only fail during the winter period. All these conditions help to achieve slow ripening, healthy grapes with crisp natural acidity and intense flavours.

Their granite soils are very poor in nutrients and very rick in quartz minerals. Their sandy character allows for excellent drainage and root penetration.
