Description
McHenry Hohnen Tiger Country Tempranillo
McHenry Hohnen Tiger Country Tempranillo is sourced from an old planting in the Yallingup Hills.
Nose is a complex array of violets, lavender and rose petal, underlined by blood orange. With a complex bouquet on the nose, the palate is supple with notes of liqourice & cocoa.
The palate shows concentrated citrus and mulberry shortcake. The gravely, rambling tannins provide the perfect savoury note to the sweetness of fruit.
Founded in 2004, McHenry Hohnen was a family venture for Brothers-in-law Murray McHenry and David Hohnen. With Murray being an accomplished fine wine retailer and David a Margaret River winemaking pioneer, their experience in making wine in the area dates back to the early 70’s. With the adoption of biodynamic and organic farming techniques, McHenry Hohnen creates wines that have a pure reflection of the land.
Since its inception, McHenry Hohnen has had an unwavering focus on crafting site expressive wines. As their vines age and the soils continue to evolve, they see the individuality and beauty of the land continually developing in our wines.
To preserve the many benefits of the sustainable, chemical free environment created in their vineyards with biodynamic and organic farming methods, a focus on minimalist intervention in the winery is paramount. Wild yeast, minimal sulphur, no filtration, large format oak and concrete fermenters all have integral roles in allowing the seamless transition from sustainably grown fruit to site reflection wines.
McHenry Hohnen’s vineyards are managed using 100% biodynamic methods which are designed to improve the vitality and health of the soil.
Biodynamic is similar to organic farming in that both take place without chemicals, but biodynamic farming incorporates ideas about a vineyard as an ecosystem, and also accounting for things such as astrological influences and lunar cycles.
Over time, methods and preparations create deeper topsoil, increase root mass and depth, increase carbon capture and water holding capacity of soils – thereby improving plant health and dramatically improving the plant’s resistance to pests and disease.
McHenry Hohnen’s vineyard manager Mike Sleegers is an experienced advocate of biodynamic farming and believes its the only way to grow the best quality grapes.
