More Information

Morande Cinsault Pais

Morande Cinsault Pais is a vivid strawberry red colour with aromas of red fruits, such as raspberries, sweet and sour cherries, and with earthy notes. On the palate, the wine is of medium to light body, this juicy wine shows plenty of fruit flavours, soft tannins and great freshness.

País is a variety introduced in Chile by the Spanish conquerors during the 16th century. Cinsault was introduced in Chile during the 1940s to compensate the lack of color and structure of País. When both varieties are blended together, they give life to fresh and light wines.

Vineyards

The Cinsault variety, extensively planted in the neighbouring southern Itata region, also grows in the Maule Valley, where the vines are low head-pruned. The grapes for this wine received just a few powdery Sulphur applications during the ripening period, so, technically they can be considered organic.

These rain-fed vineyards of our La Constancia estate, nestled in the eastern sector of the Coastal Mountain Range, close to the town of Botalcura, receive about 700 mm winter precipitations. In terms of geography, this is an area of soft rolling hills with a mixture of granitic soils, red clays, and a few colluvial sectors. Its climate is warm and dry in summer, slightly influenced by the closeness to the Pacific Ocean.
The grapes of the País variety come from old vineyards whose vines are high head-pruned and established in the same La Constancia estate. They were planted more than 60 years ago in the lower parts of the slopes on deep clayey soils, perfect for rainfed or dry farming.

Both Cinsault, locally known as “cargadora” due to its generous production, and País, also known as “chilena” or “huasa”, grow in Maule’s rural rustic areas. There they not only successfully resist drought and fungal diseases but also modern viticulture, allowing us thus to remember and preserve ancient traditions and countryside ways of life.

Producer

"When Pablo Morandé founded Viña Morandé in 1996, he did it with a great vision for the future and with the same audacity that drove him, years earlier, to be the first person to plant vines in the Casablanca Valley.

Adopting this pioneering view as our own, our winery created soon after a wine range named “Aventuras” (Adventures). Our purpose was to highlight the unknown diversity of Chilean terroirs and to draw attention to the old vines planted in the vineyards of the Secano Interior (Interior Dryland) of the Maule and Itata regions.

But we also aimed at using less renowned varieties that have been traditionally grown there. It may be worth remembering that, since the very beginning of Viña Morandé, the old vineyards grown in the Secano have had a special meaning for our winery. On one hand, Maule, and particularly the area of Cauquenes, is the place of birth of our founder.

And on the other, our winery has developed an important viticultural work throughout the years in its different terroirs, crafting wines that have been present since the first day in our portfolio." - HOME - Morandé English (morande.cl)
