Description
Morgenhof Cabernet Sauvignon
Morgenhof Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine with rich dark notes of bramble, cassis and black cherries. The wine is complemented by a variety of meaty dishes from rib eye steak to roast pork and game. It also pairs well with tomato based pasta dishes or Sicilian styled margherita pizza’s.
Producer
At Morgenhof the vineyards are farmed as ‘dry land’, which result in smaller yields but allows a superior concentration of fruit in the berries. Allowing our wines to be terroir driven, adding bold notes formed from the land we farm.
Morgenhof Estate is situated in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa. The 213 hectare estate is located on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountain where 78 hectares are planted to vineyards. The vineyards are dry farmed and worked to allow the myriad of different terroirs found on the farm to express themselves in the finished wines.
Morgenhof Estate red is its flagship wine, a blend inspired by the wines of Bordeaux. It is a blend dominated by Merlot and Cabernet produced in an elegant, mineral style with good cellaring potential. The Estate’s reds are complimented by a Chenin Blanc from a venerable old vineyard, a Chardonnay and a Sauvignon Blanc.
The Estate has a long history. It was founded in 1692 and over the following three centuries changed hands several times. In 1993 the current owner Anne Cointreau bought the estate. Anne brought a wealth of knowledge and experience with her from France’s Cognac where her family can trace their involvment in viticulture back to 1210.
In 1995 a newly constructed underground, octagonal cellar was completed. It was built so that Morgenhof’s wines have the perfect conditions to age and develop. During construction 10 000 cubic metres of soil was excavated and afterwards a formal garden created above the cellar.
In 2016 Morgenhof re-designed its labels, the new look wines will be introduced as new vintages are released.
