Description
Mount Edward Central Otago Riesling
Mount Edward Central Otago Riesling has a vibrant nose of apple blossom and orange zest with just a hint of ginger leads to a bracingly fresh palate of apple and lime. With surprising weight and texture, this clean, linear Riesling is a delightful shock to the palate with real purity and eternal finish.
Mount Edward is a small winery located in the heart of the Gibbston grape growing district, 25 km from Queenstown, in Central Otago, New Zealand.
Maverick, revolutionary, genius, ingenious, insubordinate, dynamo, pioneer and avant-garde, these are just a few words that have been used to describe Duncan Forsyth, winemaker at Mount Edward wines. With two decades of experience in Central Otago, Duncan’s aim is to make great wine that has personality, reflecting its origins with everything being ‘hands-on’. Not content with just making fantastic Pinot, after advice from French soil and wine expert Dr Claude Bourguignon in the early 2000’s, Duncan planted some Riesling in his top Morrison vineyard which now regularly delivers some of Mount Edward’s most exciting and extreme wines.
Mount Edward’s winemaking approach is traditional, using natural yeasts and minimal intervention at all stages to produce wines which reflect the vintage from which they came. The Central Otago climate and soils are unique with the parent rock being glacially derived schist. Most of the soils having been cultivated only a few times in the 100 years before the viticulturists arrived, and some not at all. The growing season is warm and dry with cool nights. It is a short season however, with a risk of frost early and late and they actively restrict crop levels managing the vine canopy to achieve balance and uniform ripeness regardless of variety.
100% fermented in stainless steel tanks and barrels. No temperature control and native yeasts.
