Description

Mount Horrocks Watervale Riesling

Mount Horrocks Watervale Riesling is bright, lime-edged, pale white gold.

Mount Horrocks Watervale Riesling is a spring garden of florals – lime blossom, honeysuckle and spice.

Pristine and almost crystalline, this is a typical delicate Mount Horrocks Watervale Riesling displaying lemon-lime and tropical fruits and pleasing minerality.

A wine of great purity and style that will age confidently for 10-12 years.

Mount Horrocks Wines is owned by winemaker Stephanie Toole, who restricts production to approximately 4000 cases per annum in order to achieve her aims of quality and single vineyard expression.

The Clare Valley winery was established in 1982 and purchased by Stephanie in 1993, who has made significant improvements to the wines, vineyards and winery.

Stephanie describes her wines as ‘hand made food wines with an emphasis on structure as well as generous fruit flavours’.

All grapes are 100% estate grown and hand picked from three separate vineyard sites totaling nearly 10 hectares in the Clare Valley.

Each release from Stephanie Toole seems to eclipse the quality standard set by the previous vintage.

The low yielding Watervale vineyards are east facing, with a mixture of red loam, loamy/clay and marl soils.

The fruit comes from a single, unirrigated, hand pruned vineyard.

These Riesling vines were originally two wire trained (the majority of Clare Valley producers still use the traditional two wire training system).

Stephanie however chose to change the training system so that the canopies are now trained upwards, with foliage wires and vertical shoot positioning.

Mount Horrocks Watervale Riesling Mount Horrocks

Bright, translucent, youthful.

Classic Mount Horrocks delicacy: lemon blossom and spice florals, lime juice and passionfruit, with mineral notes, crunchy acidity and supple length. Pure, super fine and beautifully rounded.

Should cellar for the very long term. 12-15 years.

Mount Horrocks Wines has been widely recognised by experts and wine lovers.

James Halliday in his 2014 Australian Wine Companion reaffirmed his Five Star Red Rating (Outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity).

In 2004 Mount Horrocks Cordon Cut Riesling was listed as an ‘Australian Icon Wine’ in Wine Spectator magazine (USA).

The 2011 Cordon Cut was awarded both the Decanter (UK) and International Wine Challenge (UK) Trophies for ‘Best Australian Dessert Wine over £10’; a rare achievement.

Mount Horrocks Cordon Cut Riesling was also the only Australian wine served at the official Lord Mayor of London’s luncheon to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 80th birthday at Mansion House.

In 2007 Stephanie Toole became one of just 120 or so Australian Winemakers in the history of Gourmet Traveller WINE magazine to be nominated for the Australian Winemaker of the Year Award.

“Stephanie Toole has never deviated from the pursuit of excellence in the vineyard and winery. … The attention to detail and refusal to cut corners is obvious in all of her wine.”  James Halliday 2014 Australian Wine Companion

Domaine des Ballandors Quincy 2019

This is the village adjacent to Sancerre and Pouilly Fume where wines of similar style are made but because of Quincy’s ‘lesser’ name at much reduced cost. This wine is a testament to that; the flavours and aromas achieved in this wine are equivalent to any top flight Sancerre, with ‘grippy’ edgy grapefruit notes and steely crisp fruit. When Anton Beukes, winemaker at the Môreson Winery in South Africa, tasted this wine at supper, he said; ‘This is the wine I would love to make’ - Anton makes some very serious wines, so what an accolade! Winner of Best French White Wine at ‘France under one roof’ London 2005.
