Description

Neudorf Rosie’s Block Chardonnay

Named after Tim and Judy’s daughter Rosie. Her block sits on the hill overlooking the home block. Winemaking is very similar to Moutere – 100% malolactic fermentation and only about 15 % new oak.

A green/gold wine with generous mouthfeel… white peach underscored by an intriguing savoury note. A touch of citrus and notes of dill. The wine is rich but controlled. The word sleek springs to mind. A girdle of acidity keeps the full, textured, palate under control and offers a refreshing, cleansing finish. This persistent finish which leaves a satisfying trail of flavour.

Drink it slightly cool, not cold and enjoy alongside chicken, grilled hoki and as a counterpoint to roast pork crackling.

As a wine we feel this vintage is showing splendidly considering its youth. It is drinking well now and will continue to evolve as it ages.
Suave handling of oak is elegant and restrained. A juicy wine inviting a second glance. The wine is precise and polished exhibiting classic “Neudorf” notes.

“We (Tim and I) were fresh from the “back to the land” movement of the late sixties. We wanted to make beautiful wine. We figured Tim’s masters in Animal Behaviour along with my unimpressive journalism career would be beneficial. Wrong. However we did have youth (temporary), self belief (unwarranted) and friends. At one stage we had four mortgages and three jobs each. The old house at Neudorf had electricity in two rooms, an outside long drop, an inefficient wood stove and no hot water. I look back with no regrets.

Because there was so little known about basic viticulture in New Zealand we planted many varieties to see which ones were best suited to our soils. Merlot came and went as did Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and the dreaded Muller Thurgau. We were a bit hasty in rejecting Gewürztraminer and may look at that again.

But we did it. We, and a whole heap of people – neighbours, family, friends and some fantastic staff. Each left a mark and many have gone onto work in bigger wineries or plant their own vineyard. Today 39 years later and we never feel we have it all sorted. But we love it and we are still learning, not just about viticulture and wine-making but exporting, currency exchange, the internet, human resource issues, distribution, yeasts and barrels, clones and crop levels.

Very few misgivings. Making wine is constantly scary and stimulating. We survive on hard work, high hopes and a dollop of common-sense and cunning.

So thank you everyone – wine drinkers and buyers, agents and sommeliers, staff and family. You help Neudorf survive and prosper.

So the future… Tim is a scientist by training and by nature… there will be more trials, more improvements in the field and better gear in the winery. We currently export to about 16 countries and that list continues to grow. And the challenge is still there – better and more beautiful wine year by year. When the world settles down Tim will take some time to master trout fishing, I will keep reading and painting and I hope our staff get a chance to relax a little.” – Judy, Neudorf Winery

“Light, fresh, delicate chardonnay with subtle nutty lees, oyster shell and bran biscuit flavours. Appealing purity. Quite a charming wine from a challenging vintage. When the going gets tough.” Bob Campbell MW

Domaine des Brosses Sancerre 2019

The Girard family have 6 different parcels of Sancerre vineyards. Their hillside vineyards are located on classic clay and chalk soils, giving the grippy, mineral style expected of true Sancerre. Domaine des Brosses has used a machine harvester to collect the grapes since 1989. This is so that the Sauvignon Blanc is brought to the winery in the coolness of night-time, thus retaining the classic citrus and gooseberry aromas and flavours of Sancerre. Pale yellow in colour. The nose is fresh and full of hay, citrus and mineral notes. The palate is medium in body with crisp lemon acidity and an appealing creamy complexity alongside the ripe peach, elderflower and mineral flavours which last well on the long finish.
