North British 23YO Celebration of the Cask 1995 Carn Mor

This edition of North British 23YO Celebration of the Cask 1995 Carn Mor single grain, was distilled in November 1995.

It was aged in a single sherry hogshead until June 2018, when it was bottled with an outturn of just 234 bottles.

Background:-

The North British Distillery Company was established in 1885 on the western outskirts of Edinburgh by Andrew Usher, William Sanderson and John Crabbie in 1885.

The distillery became operational in September 1887.

In its first 20 years of operation, the shareholders received a total of 440% on their investments.

In 1905, a legal challenge was raised against grain whisky, stating that to be called whisky, the product must be made from malted barley and processed through a pot still.

It took three years to successfully defend grain spirit’s right to be called whisky, and its status was eventually confirmed by law in 1908.

Recent History:-

At the turn of the 20th century, the company sold its maltings and warehousing sites at Slateford Road and Westfield Road.

It now operates on two sites, with the majority of its maturation warehousing concentrated at Muirhall in West Lothian.

North British is now owned as a joint venture between Diageo plc and The Edrington Group.

Whilst it took just over 100 years for North British to produce 1.5 billion litres of alcohol.

Modernisation enabled the company to reach the 2 billion litres milestone just ten years later in 2008, and achieve 2.5 billion in 2015.

You can almost taste the coastal flora in Clynelish Single Malt Scotch Whisky, with its crisp, medium- bodied, mustard-fresh style. Although you won’t find Islay’s powerful smokiness here, there is just a trace of it lingering. It’s said Clynelish whisky is closer to an Island style than other mainland malts, with a complex and fragrant nose and an agreeable long finish that leaves a lingering fresh-fruity flavour. Not a heavyweight, it is yet deliciously drinkable, and perfect as an aperitif.

Benriach Curiositas 10 Year Old 40%

Unusually for a speyside this is quite heavily peated in a style more common over 100 years ago. An explosion of aromatic peat reek, with fragrant hints of honey, fruit and mellow oak. On the palate an avalanche of peat, followed by an extravagant and complex mix of fruit, heather, nuts, oak wood and spices.

Dalmore's stunning 18 year old Highland malt is as rich, fruity and spicy as you could ever want from a Dalmore. Kudos to Dalmore for creating another veritable chocolate orange of a whisky - a surefire hit, and great for the colder months. It is aged for 14 years in American oak, followed by three years in Matusalem sherry butts, before a final year in sherry butts. One for the sherry monsters amoungst you.
