Description
Odfjell Armador Carmenere
Odfjell Armador Carmenere has a medley of aromas from blackberry and dark chocolate to more savoury, meaty notes. The palate displays ripe dark fruits but also coffee and liquorice. The ripe present tannins offer a solid structure and the layers of complexity keep your attention. The is both elegant and enduring.
The grapes were hand picked. The grapes were not crushed on reception at the winery, the clusters were only de-stemmed. The whole berries had four to six days of cold maceration at 14ºC prior to fermentation and one to ten days of maceration at 25ºC after fermentation. Selected yeasts were used during the fermentation, which took place in small tanks from 10,000 to 40,000 Lts. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation took place in tanks. A fifth of the wine was aged in used oak barrels (two and three years old) for up to five months.
Norwegian born ship owner Dan Odfjell discovered and fell in love with a small corner of the famous Maipo Valley in Chile over 25 years ago.
In the bygone days of the sail ships, wine provided a safe drink for long voyages. Dan Odfjell, a Norwegian “armador” (shipowner), perpetuates this legacy by making wines to sail from Chile across the seven seas.
He invested in some land which serendipitously turned out to be located in Chile’s premium red wine producing valley.
While most other top producers in Chile work with relatively young wines, Odfjell has forged a unique reputation by rediscovering the forgotten wealth of Chile’s winemaking past.
In fact, they believe their Carignan vines in Cauquenes are the oldest in Chile at over 100 years old! Although at times, this was considered an eccentric move, interest in these old sites has since grown hugely.
Odfjell is committed to being a leader in progressive vineyard management, and we are dedicated to elevating the image and practice of viticulture in Chile.
The goal of this work is to produce the best possible wines in the vineyards, while maintaining their long-term commitment to sustainable agriculture and environmental winemaking practices.
For this reason, their vineyards are 100% organic and they have also recently begun biodynamic farming.
