Olivier Leflaive Puligny Montrachet

Olivier Leflaive Puligny Montrachet expresses noble and distinguished aromas with notes of citrus, beautiful minerality and toasted scents. The mouth is elegant and tonic with a very long persistence. On the palate, flavours such as butterscotch, vanilla, pastry, floral and white peach aromas are apparent. The wine remains open and turns tense and fresh with the lingering finish. The line of acidity that cuts through the wine adds to the complexity.

The Leflaive family has resided in the village of Puligny Montrachet for centuries and it is now home to Maison Olivier Leflaive. With it’s variety of 1er Crus and a shared portion of Grand Crus Le Montrachet, Bienvenue-Batard Montrachet and Batard Montrachet, the terroir of Puligny is second to none. Each year Leflaive produces close to a dozen unique cuvées from these world class Chardonnay vineyards.

Olivier Leflaive’s village level Puligny Montrachet is sourced from 21 separate plots throughout the appellation. The unique characteristics of each plot combine in the bottle to provide a wine of great richness, complexity and age ability.

The lots are hand harvested and sorted at the winery and then undergoes primary and secondary fermentation in barrel and is aged for a total of 12 months in on its lees in 20% new oak. Following a gentle fining the wine is bottled and rests in the cellar for a short period prior to release.

The undeniable success of Chardonnay in Puligny Montrachet is the result of several factors – most of them encompassed by the concept of terroir. The local combination of topography, soil structure and climate gives producers high-quality grapes with which to make their wines. Many generations of winemakers have studied the local terrain in depth, developing a detailed theoretical map of the area, marking those sites best suited to quality viticulture. In recent years (with the help of modern technology), extensive analysis has been carried out to further this work and to examine the precise relationship between soil and wine. Although difficult to pin down, the positive effect of the limestone soils and the particular climate in Puligny is undeniable.
