Quinta do Seixo Vintage Port

Quinta do Seixo Vintage Port is deep purple in colour, with intense aromas of cherry, raspberry, plum and blue berries; coupled with spicy notes of pepper and nutmeg, and a hint of cedar wood. It has a taut structure, with excellent firm tannins, good acidity and red-fruity spicy flavours on the palate, with a long smooth finish.

‘Don’, the logo created for the Sandeman family in 1928 by George Massiot Brown. The cape was modelled on the attire worn by university students in Porto, while the wide-brimmed hat was a nod to the family’s presence in Jerez. Today, the wines are good enough to be every bit as famous as the image of the Don. Since Sogrape bought Sandeman in 2002, the major improvements and investment that has taken place in the vineyards and the winemaking has seen the wines rise to the top of the tree in Port. The production of Port – especially Tawny – requires patience and a long-term vision, something which explains why families like the Guedes are among the major players in the Port business today.

Sandeman Quinta do Seixo 2013 is made at the Quinta do Seixo winery from grapes from different sections of the Quinta’s vineyards. Gentle crushing and partial destemming was followed by intense maceration during the alcoholic fermentation. The maceration was done by treading in traditional granite lagars (shallow fermentation troughs). The wine remained in the Douro until the following spring, when it was transported to Vila Nova de Gaia to embark upon the traditional ageing process in oak vats. Its development in its first two years of life was carefully monitored under the winemakers’ watchful eyes.

The winter of 2012/2013 was cold and rainy, as was the spring. Temperatures in the summer were lower than usual with very low rainfall. The vines were behind schedule and remained so, right up to the vintage, which began on average around 8-10 days late. Rainfall, including some very heavy downpours, disrupted picking at the end of September and early October.
