Description

Complex aromas of dark fruit, a hint of meatiness and something more mineral/stony. Tannins pretty dry right now but there’s juicy fruit to compensate. Strong sense of authenticity, if that does not sound too pretentious. Dry, dry, firm tannins, refined, lithe and long without overweening power. It would not be hard to finish the bottle.

Reyneke Organic Red

Reyneke Organic Red has complex aromas of dark fruit, a hint of meatiness and something more mineral/stony tannins pretty dry right now but there's juicy fruit to compensate.

Reyneke Organic Red has a strong sense of authenticity, if that does not sound too pretentious, dry, firm tannins, refined, lithe and long without overweening power.

It would not be hard to finish the bottle.

The Reyneke label was created in 1998 when Johan Reyneke Jr. took over the farming activities from his mother and produced the first wines on the family farm, Uitzicht.

The 20ha farm faces the historic town of Stellenbosch and overlooks the surrounding mountain ranges and the beautiful False Bay.

Since inception, Johan has moved from farming conventionally to farming organically and finally to farming and producing his wines in accordance with biodynamic principles.

He is currently one of only a few winemakers in South Africa who produce biodynamic wines and is considered somewhat of a ground-breaker in this regard.

WE BELIEVE there's a lot to be said for the way winemaking used to be.

There were no chemicals, no "technological advancements" that made the process a process, and natural balance was more important than balance sheets.

Some people dismiss it as old-fashioned nostalgia, but we like to think of it as ancient wisdom. And we embrace it as much as we can. Not just because it's better for the earth, but because it makes for better wine.

THE REYNEKE VINEYARDS are herbicide, pesticide and fungicide free. Just like any organic vineyard should be.

Instead of spraying weeds with poison, we carefully select and grow companion plants amongst our vines to outcompete the weeds. http://www.reynekewines.co.za/pages/our_approach/in_the_vineyards.php

These companion plants have the ability to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere, help break up compacted soil or even harbour a beneficial insect or two.

While all sorts of poisons are usually used to combat pests, we simply release their natural predators, like ducks – there’s nothing more delicious for a duck than a good, juicy snail.

No poison leaching into the grapes. No expensive fertiliser because the ducks do that for us. Everyone’s happy.
